I am new to the entire truck community. I need something to carry around my pit bikes. Also, I am sick of having to order special tools from Germany to work on my own vehicle. Its time to buy a truck, and its time to buy American. I don't need the size of an F-250, but its definitely my style. I'm in the process of purchasing a 2003 F-250 Lariat. 8cyl gasoline. Its got a few missing pieces of trim and a ding in the from bumper, but its beautiful inside and runs and shifts smoothly. I haven't signed anything yet, because i'm worried about the mileage, being that its a gas, rather than diesel. Its got 165k. They're only asking 7900, and I figured this would be a decent, entry level truck. At 165k, assuming it was maintained well, should I expect this truck to last a few years without spending too much in maintenance, or is 165k about what time some of the pricier parts start to wear?
Thanks
Phil
It depends on the previous owner on how they took care of it, used it.
I'm on my 6th truck with gas engines and all have over 225K miles on each. Some things to look at will be leaf springs for cracked/ broken leafs, shocks - is there any moisture in the tubes where they slide in & out, rotors - do they feel gouged or rough to the finger tips, is there any slop in the u joints, ball joints and tie rods, obviously tires are they worn because if your buying new ones they're not cheap. In the engine area look for oil on the engine or under carriage. These are just some of the things that just need to be addressed when these trucks start to see high miles.
I wouldn't be afraid to buy a truck with those miles as long as you look it over, with proper care engines today I believe can easily see 250K + miles. Most folks want new and better and trade/ sell these things off with a ton of life left in them.
Good luck on the truck hunt and the guys here will help with most questions you might have. Also try Edmunds or Kelly blue book to see what the truck might list for, but remember it's worth only what your willing to pay.
