Mobil 1 extended performance

Saw Mobil 1 has a new extended change interval oil out. (commercial last night) 15k btw changes - anybody got uoa results yet or other lab test results?

Tempted to try it but maybe not for the whole 15k the 1st time. We have a couple of vehicles we put 20k a year on that we are already running 8-9k btw changes on Mobil 1 with pretty good uoa results but we tried 10k once and b-stone advised we change it a little earlier.

I have some in my truck now because my local wal-mart just can't seem to keep PP 5w-30 in stock. Read the bottle, the 15k mile OCI is only under certain conditions. If you can get already get 8k-9k out of standard M1 I would try the Extended Perf in one of your trucks and get a UOA with TBN around 7500 miles and see where you are at.

Read the "fine print" - its "up to 15k" and they "suggest" you still follow the mfg recommended interval. There's also a disclaimer for servere service.

The available weights are an issue for us as well - 5w30 is only listed as ok not "preferred" according to the VW manual. The manual wants 5w40 or 15w40 which is also what mobil suggests. Both of our TDI's have been doing very well on the Mob 1 5w40 TDT. Looks like we'll be sticking with the 5w40. I was hoping they'd have more weights available but the selection is targeted @ gas applications. Guess Mob doesn't want to add another oil to their diesel oil line-up

I didn't know you had diesels. Your going to want to use an oil formulated for diesels then. Get what meets the manufacturers specs.

Maybe look into Redline or Amsoil oils. A lot of people who run extended OCIs run it.

Why not try Mobil 1 TDT or Delvac 1, I am sure they are capable of long drain intervals...just make sure you get a UOA.

We run Delvac 15w40 - was hoping for a slightly cheaper non-synth extended interval oil. We have too many trucks (8 SD's + 4OTR) to sw to synth.

Find a Shaffer oil dealer in your area. They have a superior oil and its designed to extend oil changes out as far as possible. They do this with their oil analysis program. I did this for a fleet at my former employer. We extended oil changes out quite substantially for equipment that ran all day in severe duty. I couldnt believe how long we were able to go on some of these pieces of equipment. They have other products too such as grease fuel additives etc. If your running like a fleet its the best thing going.

I'll check Shaffer out - I think I've looked at them before and we don't have a dlr in the area but that was a few yrs ago. I don't remember if they met the Volvo/Mack lubricant spec or not - we also use the same oil in our JD tractors. We try to keep them all the same (where we can) so we only need to stock 1 oil. We used to run 3 different types of oils - what a pain that was. Had drivers and operators mixing straight 30w w/ 15w40 and vice versa. We had oil "cocktails" go'n on in some of our engines because folks misread the drums or misread the service sticker.

Unless you have 2-stroke Detroits or similar in your fleet, why would you need more than one oil? Just because an old engine said SAE 30 CD, or something like that, does not mean it will not benefit from a more modern 15W-40. The API wants to discontinue all straight weights soon anyway.

Like I said - we "used" to have 3 weights around - prob about 12-14 years ago. Switched to running 15w40 in the late nineties - a lot of folks switched for the same reasons we did - too many mix ups.

Maybe consider checking out Chevrons line, seems they may have your thoughts covered.
0W-30, 10W-30, 5W-40, ect, ect, diesel applications & some are also for SL/SM applications in gasoline engines, so if you have a mixed fleet you may find a one fits all product & seeing as how your in Va & the weather here isn't what I'd call extreem.
Basham Oil is the Chevron & Motorcraft Distributor here in Roanoke & are nice folks to deal with, as are the Chevron application people, if you need more info.

Thanks, I know those guys - we've stuck with Mobil for a while now but they are becoming less attractive as the prices keep heading up. We use about 55-60gals of 15w40 per month with a little bit of 5w40 and 0w40 for a few of the vehicles. We're primarily a Diesel fleet but we do have a few gas engines that we service in our shop for us, friends and neighbors, etc. Biggest deal for us is being able to get consistent servicing despite our relative low volume of usage when compared to larger shops & fleets.

It looks like a lot of diesel fleets are not going to be able to stock only one oil in the near future.

Work Starts on New Heavy-duty Oils

The new standard will not be backward compatible. There will be a "legacy" formula to cover that. The primary difference is lower HTHS viscosity for fuel economy, which will not adequately protect older technology engines.
