If the EMP's take out the computer chips and transistors, then won't the gas pumps stop too? As well as the utilities to your house? And the newer vehicles (planes, trains, automobiles)? Just asking.

Maybe what we all need is a garden, a well with a hand pump, a bicycle, and plenty of ammo.

Y2K etc

Hey all...thanks for all the replies...

I am not here to debate doomsday possibilities. I did not believe the world was going to end in 2000 and I do not believe it will end in 2012

But I DO believe the forecasts of NASA, NOAA, and other agencies that 2012 will be an epic year for solar weather--with thre possibility of critial damage to the tech infrastructure that we all rely on to live the way we do.
If you want, there's boatloads of stuff about solar storms all over the web.
The biggest threats are widespread blackouts. Worst-case scenarios predict the power grid might be down for a LONG time. And yes...that does mean that the gas pumps won't work.
But, neither will 99 percent of the vehicles. So just keep a siphon hose in your truck, and, in the event of a big EM hit, you can siphon your way across America.

That is...if your vehicle works...

I don't see how it's different than putting away emergency supplies in case of any other natural disaster.

Thanks for looking.

Hey, I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just yanking your chain. And I agree with being prepared for a natural disaster.

Stag,

Can you please post links to verifiable information from credible, reputable sources as to the authenticity of these claims?

Yes, there is stuff all over the web about solar storms - much of it from places such as YouTube and endoftheworld.org and solarstormwarning.com - places with absolutely zero credibility.

Asking the reader to go look up and verify the information made in your claims, that's like handing in a research paper to the prof at college but, instead of quoting your sources and including a bibliography, you tell the prof to go look up and verify your claims himself.

That will get you a big, fat F.

As far as solar storms go, my understanding is:

They operate on something of an 11-year cycle in intensity and have been occurring since recorded history was started;

Basically, they create magnetic energy in the atmosphere, and since one can take a magnet and move it across a loop of wire to cause electrons (electricity) to flow through it, the same concept transpires and electrical things can be damaged by this energy.

That is the gist of it; these storms can and do happen, and electrically-operated devices & infrastructure sometimes are damaged as a result.

Just like tornadoes & hurricanes & earthquakes & falling stars.

If you had the only operating vehicle on the North American continent should one of these doomsday-like solar storms wipe out electrically-operated infrastructure, then 1) you would be killed, and 2) the vehicle would eventually be destroyed by all the people fighting over it.

Regardless, what I want from you is verifiable information from credible and reputable sources substantiating your claim that "...2012 will be an epic year for solar weather--with thre possibility of critial damage to the tech infrastructure that we all rely on to live the way we do."

Ah ha!

The real reason for this kind of talk in a truck technical forum comes out.....

The real reason for this kind of talk in a truck technical forum comes out.....
Yes, they are forcasting such conditions but, this will only affect microwave type transmitors (antennas) and satelite recievers. back in the late 70's/early 80's when Porsche was one of the 1st to use electronic fuel injection, their on board e-modules were subject to a variety of issues including CB transmission (close by)....my uncles 911, I use to play with him on the freeway and key the mic on my CB radio while I was in the immedate lane adjacent to him, it would literally kill the engine! Within just a few months, porsche issues a recall and replaced the boxes with an insulated unit......the same type of insulation is used by all mfgs today. Now for the EMP issue, yes, a generated beam with either narrow or wide focus would "kill" most if not all e-boxes, but this would have to be a purposefull act, not a act of nature such as a solar flare. And yes EMP is becoming a recognized threat within.......there was proposed legislation in congress a few months ago proposing that 20% of the nations infrastructure be EMP protected, the legislation failed....but we will probably see it again in the future.
In general, critical infrastructure systems (such as fire alarm panels) are protected against RF bands which occurred in the 70's IIR, because of many reasons most of which was practicality....a fire fighter could not stand near a panel & transmit without activating the alarm sequences in the panel....which kinda defeats the purpose........so, unless you rely on Satelite, which solar flares, etc allready impact, you're probably ok..........if you need a threat assessment, contact me!

I don't know enough about them.

But if you'll excuse me, I need to go back to the basement and wear my tin foil hat and sit with my canned food. Except we don't have basements in central Texas; should I build a bunker instead?

I'm not worried about 2012; I'm worried about when gasoline runs out. That's when the looting, panic and mayhem will really begin!
X2 I wonder if we ever will, its got to be finite I suppose but there must be trillions of cubic tons of material still turning into petroleum beneath us somewhere. Despite all the gloom and doom, the govts really dont seem worried about it as there appears to be no serious efforts to replace it. Keesler air base is nearby and on any given day huge cargo transport planes take off and land constantly along with numerous fighters and military passenger jets. Can you imagine how much the military in this country alone must burn a day? there obviously is no shortage, you can buy all you want at the pumps, no gas lines, just be willing to pay $3 here. The speculators and oil producers are playing games with the markets.
