Truck2- 97F250XLT 460 w/ 4.10 $12K 100% White
Both are excellent condition 4x4 XCab LongBed (Very Tough to Find). Both also have Towing package, auto, 8800 GVWR, and about 113000 miles. These trucks are very similar. I will probably be trading in my 95F150.
They always say stay away from first year models. I am familiar with the 99 5.4 engine problems, but how about the 99 V10s?
With the 99 you get a straight axle front suspension, not the IFS, so thats a plus. You also get the new body style, another plus.
As far as the V10 goes, I'm not sure about problems, the guys that have them will fill you in.
Get the 99 for sure! The solid axle setup is far superior in my opinion if you want to run bigger tires or a lift. Most think it's better anyway but I always lift my rigs so I don't worry about what works stock. I don't have a v-10 but I posted a similar question when I was shopping and was told that the 99 v-10 has less power than the newer ones due to head design.
I really can't notice that much of a difference between the '97HD and the '99's ride. I know that the '97 flexes, which can be an advantage, I personally like the 460, not just because I have one, but just the fact that it wasn't designed to counter a competitor's V-10 engine. I know competition provides strong motivation, but they could've made a V-8 that made more power than the other's. A bad example is the Ch. 8.1. It is a V-8 and has more power than both the Ford and the Dodge V-10's, which something should be done about. I have driven a V-10 van, I was impressed, but it felt like there was something missing. Anyway, my vote is go for the '97, it has a proven engine, most of the problems with the front axle and tranny were worked out, and is a reliable performer. Seeing that you are on a farm tells me that you probably won't be lifting this truck up.
Well, I probably won't be turning it into a monster mudder anytime soon. I really like the 460, but I also like the new body style. They both have manual hubs too which is a plus. I'm going to drive them again maybe something will stick out in my mind
