I was wondering what the difference was between d44 and hd44. I thought one was 8 lug made for f250's and one was for f150's. Can you please explain this in detail for me.
You pretty much nailed it. The real difference was in the old closed knuckle axles. The newer ones swap just about everything but the brakes and bearings in the knuckle.
Were D44HDs high pinion, low pinion, or both? And when were high pinion D44s first available for dents? All the way through the series?
The D44HD's were low pinion only, and only came in F250's (highboys) and crew cabs....high pinion D44's were available throughout both the bump and dent series in F100's and F150's, the F250 didn't get a high pinion D44 until midyear '77 (78/79's).
Nevermind the below - unless you want to know the difference between d44 and d44 HD in TTB axles - which is what I had in mind when I replied originally. Re-reading the above made me realize you guys are talknig solid axles (duh - this is the dentside forum!). I will leave the link below here just in case someone finds this thread in a search & could use the info.
