Totally missed the fact that he said he just got his first diesel. I think you should go through and replace both fuel filters change the oil new oil filter check all fluids. Its a good idea to wright down the mileage. Since this is your first diesel you need to know the 6.0 can be really crabby if you neglect the fluids/filters. stick to the oem filters too if you can.
no check eng. light, i did stop at auto zone and was told to add this stuffi it was called " kleen "i think was the name to my fuel, and i did lastnite, drove around and did same **** but the more i drove the better it got then it was gone and truck ran great...... im thinking it was the fuel? but what do i know

Duke mentioned codes Great Idea there get them scanned
start thinking about a scangauge do a search on here ton of info on them and you need AMGauges for shure on these
and welcome to FTE
+1 on the ScanGauge. The gauges for temp/pressure on the factory cluster are designed as idiot lights. There are some options, Scangauge, Edge Insight, Dashdaq, and some of the tuners have gauges built in if you plan on tuning, but you need somthing. Monitoring coolant and oil temps is particularly important. The spread between these two #'s indicates the health of the oil cooler. There are a few other values we need to keep an eye on also.
Well, if you are going to clean the EGR, might as well park it nose down and let it sit a spell. Then when you pull the EGR valve you can check for fluid in the intake. Probably nothing in there, but good time to check.
Also, go to this thread and post your e-mail address and get a ton of info.
Oopps, see you posted one above, if you want this info I can send it to you. Have had issues with comcast addresses sometimes, but we can give it a try.
I would def. say the fuel filters should be changed first. When my egr valve gunked up it didnt make me loose complete power just made it surge and blow black smoke.JMO
what does your boost guage on the dash read, it should vary considerably with engine load, at WOT it should cimb as high as 28psi, highway cruising mine hovers around 13psi, at idle is should be down to zero, also make note that without it in gear the boost guage will not move much even though you rev it, is normal.
visually inspect the wire going to the trubo make sure it is seated properly,
i have to be honest, the thought that popped into my head when i read his post was egr valve also
