You have to read your manual for specific capacities. They are the capacities for the 2010 I have, 6R80 6-speed trans which you don't have either. Your truck might use Merc 5 but it might use Merc SP also. Again, I'm not sure for the '05, you have to ask one of the guys from the 04-08 forum if you don't have your manual. Chandler- or MCDavis is his screen name- is up here alot and I'm sure he could hook you up, as he is a handsome AND knowledgeable man

Oh okay that's cool I know I'm in the '09-'10 section and was simply talking about trans flush so you confused me with the whole Motorcraft LV thing. Yes my transmission uses Merc V and not the SP, as for capacity it may in fact be 13 quarts as I have never been given an exact amount or ever really pursued the knowledge of it, but I will know for sure after tomorrow once my buddy gets the trans back in the truck and I am up and running again. I like stopping by these other sections because you do learn alot of other things like the fact that these newer F150s use a different fluid in the trans and they don't have a dip stick to check the fluid level, which if you ask me really SUCKS!!!! Apparently the factories really don't want us working on our own stuff by making it harder and harder just to even diagnose a problem with a vehicle.
Hey chumley, just noticed your avitar, pretty funny. Nice 150 you got there, but I would have no use for it with the bed that's on it, what is that a 5.5' bed?
Lets see if this works Pics of the 09 6 speed trans dip stick. - F150online Forums
Thats what I get for trying to be fancy Yes it is a 5.5' bed. I don't have the need for anything bigger, I have a trailer if I do. Thanks for the compliments
Back on track here, how much fluid does the pan hold? When I did my trans in my 6.0 diesel I knew it would hold 8-9 qts if I just dropped the fluid in the pan. I also knew that it held approx 17-18 qts total. If the 5.4 holds 13.1 qts how much would I need to just do the drop-n-drain? I don't know if anyone has done this yet, may not get an answer. There is a former trans engineer here on FTE, Mark Kovalsky, who might be the one to ask this. Anyone?
I don't know about the '09s, but my '05 5.4 takes a little less than 5 qrts every pan drop. I would think if you had 5 qrts handy with the '09s you would be good to go.
I haven't decided exactly when I will change my trans fluid, maybe right before the 60k? But that worries me, my wife had an 04 Explorer Limited with the 4.6, we had the dealer flush it and within a month it was back in for a rebuild. Erratic shifting, just wacky. IIRC it had ~ 40k on it when this happened. That worries me, if I have them flush it and the warranty is done, then something like that happens I'm on the hook for the rebuild. Most likely I will drop/drain/refill at some point, to be determined...

That's what I was saying before, that I read where doing a trans flush would screw up some transmissions. I'd stay away from the flush and just do a pan drop and filter change, whatever you do if you do the pan drop make sure do the filter change.

The dealer told me they don't do a filter change with the flush, that they only change it with a rebuild. I asked him how does the filter get cleaned then, does it get backflushed and the crud comes out with the flush? He said yes, to which I replied OK, well its on you. Its still under warranty so it only costs me the deductible. Well, lo and behold, they had to rebuild it Now I'm NOT saying that these results are typical, but it makes me NOT want to get it flushed. Your results will vary

unbelievable, well I guess it is believable if your talking about a dealership. I'm sorry but, what a load of crap they are feeding people, especially considering what a filter costs. There are many reasons why I do my own work on my truck and why it never sees a dealership, and that certainly can be one of them. I'm actually laughing as I read your post chumley, and I hope it's not your truck your talking about, if it is then I'm sorry for laughing cause that really is not funny when you think about it, it's actually scary that someone is getting paid to tell you something like that. I've changed my trans filter 3 times now at the proper intervals and it certainly can't hurt putting a new filter on. Hell, we might as well not change our fuel or oil filters but rather pull them and flush them out too. There's a reason they make filters and use them, and that of course is to catch hold any and all impurities or debris and keep those things from getting into whatever system your filtering. The only washable or cleanable filters that I know of are air filters. Unreal
No its not my truck, it was the wifes Explorer, which we traded in 2.5 yrs ago on something of the German variety. Thats what she wanted, and she IS the CFO lol
