This has happened 3 times in the past 2.5 years and I can't figure it out. The last time it happened, a mechanic said that it was the ignition module. That seemed to correct it until yesterday.
1989 Bronco, 302, AOD 236,000 miles. Runs like a top except these 3 times.
It hesitates when driving like it is fuel starvation related then it will just die a few minutes later. It will crank and crank but will never quiet start up. All 3 times it finally started after about 30 minutes. I keep the fuel pump replaced about every 10,000 miles but I also usually let it go down to empty before I fill er up. Usually about 28 gallons of the 32 or 33 gallon tank.
Could it be sediment ? Could it be heat related ? Has anyone else had this type of problem ? If so, what was your fix ?
Thanks much guys. I need help because this is my daily driver.
Put a fuel pressure gauge on it and run it out the back of the hood so you can see it as you drive. My mother's '92 Grand Marquis just did that over the weekend and that's how I finally tracked it down.
Hey Steve83, would that lead to the replacement of the fuel pressure regulator or 1 of the 2 fuel pumps ? The regulator probably has at least a 100,000 miles on it and the fuel pump under the driver seat has about 75,000 miles but the in tank one is original with over 236,000 miles on it.
Thanks Steve83, I tried checking the fuel pressure but it was normal. I ended up having to replace the EEC Power relay next to the Fuel Pump relay in the engine well on the driver side. Mine had a short in it. Once this was replaced, I also found out that my wiring harness at the connector was bad so I went to FORD and picked one up for $10. and soldered the wires together. HOPEFULLY, this is the problem that I have been dealing with for over 2 years now.
Glad to hear you found it. If it ever gives you trouble again, install a Bosch-type relay. They're much better, cheaper, & easier to find than those old Ford-types. Even Wal-Mart sells them.
