I thought I had seen everything when it comes to old Fords.......but what the heck is this?? Some kind of gizmo hooked to the back of the speedo.
Looks like it had a vacuum line attached....
This is out of a '51 F-6 parts cab I'm tearing down........
The governor on the base of the carb is for limiting RPM, mostly with the PTO in use; I'm thinking this unit is to limit speed (not RPM) for whatever reason. Arrowhead Fred needs one of these!! Or else it is a "permissive" signal, sending vacuum to some accessory once a certain speed is reached.
Edit: I get it, I think! Rbig1 is right. With the two-speed rear axle, reading the driveshaft RPM for speed is incorrect in one of the two ratios. So when you engage the rear axle, (with vacuum, right?) it shifts gears in the speedo to show the correct speed.
It's a 2-speed transmission for the speedometer cable, so that the speedo is correct in either high or low gear in the rear-end.
I guess that kind of makes sense?? your sure?
. I have one on my 52 F6 with vacumn control 2 speed rear end. I can't remember off the top of my head how it hooks up to the vacumn control on the engine side of firewall though. I was just looking at mine 2 nights ago and the rubber boot deal is torn on mine. guess I need to get the other parts to it out and see if I can remember how it goes?? I think I took pictures but where oh where are they now... lol
Are you going to use it? I figure if I can ever get my F6 back together enough to drive I'll just get the rear end in high range and leave it there and may not even worry about hooking up the vacum shift control initially, at least????
