Programming Remote Transmitters

Hi all,

I'm having trouble programming remotes for my X. Is there any other way to enter programming mode besides the 8x key switch technique??

Is there some reason you can't use the 8X method? I've used it on mine and I programmed my 2003 EX and my 2000 F350 to use the same FOB. It was easy.

At first, about every 10th try I could get it into programming mode. Now it won't go into programming mode at all. Even when I could get it into programming mode, it wouldn't accept the new fob (pressing a fob button didn't do anything).

Are you sure you're using a correct fob? There are about 20 different Ford fob models, and not all fobs work with all vehicles. Your dealer can tell you which model # will work with your vehicle.

Also, make sure the battery in the fob you are trying to use is good (I had one I got from the dealership with a bad battery in it - took one from a fob that worked and replaced it and the new fob worked).

I seem to be having trouble entering into the programming mode. You know; the ole' turn the key off & on eight times real fast and the door locks are suppose to lock & unlock to let you know your in the program mode. Since mine would enter the program mode, I called Ford to verify the manual was right. They said it was and I must have a bad module. Can anybody tell me where this specific module is? I have a 2000 wiring diagram book but am unable to locate it in the book. Thanx all. Oh yea, just in case anyone was wondering, I do have one fob that does work and was trying to program to more that have new batteries.

From: Nevada,
hey, if you have a 2000 i have had great luck with a 5x meathod instead of 8, make sure all doors are fully closed before you start and you have to wait for up to 5 min for confirmation from the module. hope this helps.

R.
  • All keyless entry remote transmitters must be programmed at the same time.
  • To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) , perform the following steps.
  1. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN five times within 10 seconds , ending in RUN. If the GEM has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and unlock all the doors.
  2. Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
  3. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait for several seconds and press the button again.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 1, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the GEM will lock and unlock all the doors one last time

Thanks a million. I'll give it a shot. Where I work they get new Crown Vics & Sables every year, and every year there is a slight change in programming of the seatbelt minder, auto door locks, remote transmitters, and etc.

I'll give you method a try and post my results.

smassie88, my '02 F350 is doing the same thing as your X. Did you ever figure it out?

mphymel,

Sorry to report, none of the above ideas worked. Also, I am still un able to locate the "GEM" in the wiring diagram book so I can see about getting another one so I can swap it out and program my other remotes. My wife uses the working remote given to us by the dealer. I did not prefer to carry one at the time along with us thinking it was only a dead dead battery did not get on it right away and now it's too late to go complain to the dealer about a non-working item on the vehicle. I just can not get the truck to enter "program mode" to program to other two remotes I have. One of the non-working remotes has the same last two letters, "AB" as the working one and the other remote does not, it has "BB", I believe. If you or anyone learns any more please pass it on. Thank-You

The GEM module is the little plastic box that is bolted to the top of the fuse box. The GEM module costs over 300 for the part and has to be programmed with the dealer scanner. It controls all kinds of stuff (interior light delay etc.) and has to be programmend for the specifc truck.

I am having a problem with my F350 where it will go into program mode but will not take the program. I have gotton it to work a few times at point-blank range, but it won't even do that anymore.

I may add an aftermarker entry system.

Best of luck,

David

Ahhhhhh, I was under the impression "GEM" was the term used to refer to several small box/computers throughout the truck that control various types of related equipment. Example: one for the power windows another for power locks and etc. Oh well, back to the ole' drawing board. Thanks

I am having a similar problem on my 02 X I can program my remotes but my truck only responds to them immediatly after programming or shutting the truck off. So I can use them to lock the truck but when I get back I have to use the key or the keypad. Another wierd thing was when the local Ford dealer read my door code the conventional way it came up with the door code of 9 11 9 11 9. I cannot find the 11 button they used the datalogging option and retrieved my real code that works. I want to install remote start but I need to resolve this remote unlock issue first.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem? I am thinking I have a flaky GEM? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a copy of the factory programming sheet that every dealer would have, and all years of the Excursion use procedure "A", which is the 8 method. It is a timing sensitive procedure.
