testing the pip ( crank position sensor)

How do you test the PIP ( crank position sensor)? My buddy has a 1980 351 bronco ( federal truck) eec 3 ign. system. He has changed everything. Coil , ign. mod , computer, ign. relay , crank position sensor. The engine will crank but no spark until the key starter is released. Then a yellow spark will shoot across the spark plug which is connected to the coil wire. I think the ignition mod might not be sensing crank rotation. Any ideas? Thanks Greg

Sounds more like the power to it is coming off an circuit that's shut down during cranking, or it has a bad ground.

The Haynes manual tells how to test the PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup).

test it by backprobing the 2 crank sensor pins with a voltmeter set on ac voltage.A quality meter maybe required such as a fluke. I have tried using a radio shack brand for this test before and it will kill a engine that is already running. Dont remember the spec but you should see 1/2 - 3 volts cranking i think.
