Anyone have experience in the registration/insurance cost of the two in California?

Only thing I can say is that you can order an f350 SRW with a 10,000 GVWR from the factory for a situation where registration is problematic for a vehicle with over 10K weight rating.

Your question is the reason it exists........

If you haven't already, you might try posting this in the California Chapter forum as well. You might get a quicker response from some of the owners there that have experienced this.

Kali doesn't have the 10K registration issue for trucks with pickup bodies; they exempt pickups up to 11,500 GVWR, which means all the SRW F350 pickups are treated just like smaller/lighter pickups. F350 DRW, and flatbeds, box trucks, etc. are not exempted and may have additional requirements depending upon use (DOT and Kalifornia Motor Carrier permits, for example--the latter even for personal non-commercial use).

There will be a slightly higher base registration fee because of the slightly higher sticker price of the F350 over the F250 (very tiny difference). That's the part of the Kali registration fee which is considered a tax on value.

The will be another slight difference depending upon which unladen weight class the truck falls into; e.g., in Kali, a truck with an unladen weight over 8000 lbs will have a slightly higher weight fee than one with an unladen weight under 8000 lbs. If you're talking crew cab F250/F350 you'll be right on the cusp of 8000 lbs with either one. Standard cab and supercab will fall under 8000 lbs unladen, and the weight fees will be slightly lower for those.

The other potential difference will depend upon the county in which you register the truck. Some Kali kounties have added extra flat fees of anywhere from $10 to $50 for all vehicles registered within them. You can tell how this might affect you by looking at the registration renewal for your current vehicle(s).

Insurance cost will depend on your location, and your carrier. No standard answer for that.

Bottom line: maybe a $100 difference in Kali registration fees between the F250 and the F350 SRW, if even that much, and for insurance, you'll have to ask your insurance agent/carrier.
