my truck started ticking and i think it is the water pump because the temperature goes way up and also the heater doesnt work until the temperature get as high as the stock gage goes and i smell anti freeze. i was thinking it was just the thermostat but it wouldnt tell me what the ticking was. so could i get some help? i have 1968 highboy with a 390 or 360 im not sure i dont think it matters. could t be the heater cor?
koch26,do you smell the antifreeze inside the cab?If you do then it is probably a leaking heater core,if you are smelling it in the engine compartment then you might be able to see the leak. The ticking noise might be the water pump impeller bouncing around on what is left of the impeller shaft. My 390 gets up to temp in about 5 minutes when its cold outside, try doing this then after 5 or so minutes check the temp in the radiator and the bottom radiator hose. If the radiator and bottom hose starts warming up right away then I would guess that the thermostat is stuck open. If the radiator and bottom hose stay cool for 5 or more minutes of run time then I would guess that the thermostat is frozen closed. Also check for too much free play in the water pump shaft and for anti freeze leaking out of the pee hole under the pump shaft at the bottom of the shaft housing. Either one of these things means the pump is about done in.Always replace the thermostat, radiator cap and hoses when replacing the water pump. Also check the heater inline control valve for proper function.
I put 2 and half gallons of anti freeze in it. I feel like a idiot for not checking it. And also I found a leak at the water heater lower hose. Everything is fixed so far but the leak. I tightened the clamp but I will have to see if it fixes it
