Are you mechanically inclined enough to pull the motor? If you can get the short block to a machine shop and have it machined you could use all your existing parts to save a lot of money.
You might be able to get by finding a shortblock as well and using all your existing parts on it.
I am but unfortunately I don't have the room, tools, or time.
Matt
Understood. I was changing the oil on my X today and thought to myself how hard it must be to pull the engine. I am guessing grill, bumper, core support etc. has to be removed since I cant pull it from the bottom. That or pull the body. (Contemplating a Cummins conversion).
If it were mine I would try and oil and filter change first. Do you have a fram filter on there? If the problem persisted I would try a oil pump if they are reasonably priced. Then maybe start looking for a motor.
Did you check the oil to see if there was any residue or metal shavings in it? Slight knock unfortunately sounds like a bearing problem. Maybe you will get lucky and it was just some piston slap on a cold day? We can only hope. Its too close to the holidays to have a major expense like an engine overhaul.
I went by the dealer shortly after it was towed there. The knock was horrible and you could hear what I can only imagine is the rod slapping around inside the cylinder.
I have the truck back at the house while I evaluate options. All told the dealer ended up wanting over $6000 which is more than i'm willing to put into the truck. At this point i'm debating two options.
A)Swapping out the engine with a junkyard replacement. Thanks to the help of forum members i've located a couple lower-mileage units for around $1800-2000. I don't have room to complete the swap here but could have found a couple shops that would be willing to do it for around $1200 so $3200 give or take.
B)Keeping the body and swapping it onto a wrecked donor ex. I've located a couple 2000 4wd excursions that have been wrecked/rolled. Is it ridiculous to think I could pick one of these up and simply swap my body onto the new frame? My truck is a 2000 2wd 6.8 and i've located a 2000 4wd 6.8. This might cost a little more but I really need 4wd after a recent move and if I simply replaced the engine i'd end up selling the truck and then trying to find a replacement.
Am I smoking crack thinking I can simply buy the wrecked truck and swap my body on (assuming the same year and engine)?
If the engine has low oil pressure surely the gauge/warning light would have been on and you would have noticed it.
It is possible that the knock you have is carbon knock. I would look in this area. But do verfiy if the oill pressure first. I'm sure at this point you have checked to make sure its not an exhaust stud blown out.
