Transmission Cooler Attachment Method

I'm not sure on the best mounting position for the additional cooler. The article describes mounting it to the bumper of the truck in the article but based on F150's bumper design that won't work. Are there any recommendations on where I could place the second cooler?

Any ideas for this or should I just replace the stock cooler with an aftermarket cooler?

Since the lines for most Fords enter the radiator on the driver's side, that is where I would put the aftermarket cooler in front of the radiator. I would attach it with brackets and not attach it directly to the radiator itself. I think a fan based cooler would be the best thing, especially at low speeds where heat-build up is of the biggest concern.

I bend and flair my own lines, so I like to run hard lines from the transmission, right to the cooler. Just remember to use some S shaped bends to relieve tension and to give some flex.

I do not think oil coolers and oil filters behind bumpers are good things. Because when you smash your bumper, your truck is disabled, at the very least. Since the rubber hose will be behind the grill, if the rubber hose attaching the lines to the cooler start to leak, they are easily seen and replaced. If you run rubber hose under the truck, they can leak without you noticing and are much messier to replace.

Whatever size line you use, always carry a small bit of hose and two clamps in case you ever have to fix a break.

Thanks for the information. I had thought about attaching it in front of the radiator on the driver's side but wasn't sure if that would impede air flow to the radiator and degrade the performance of the engine cooling system to a point where I would have overheating problems.

No it will not. The transmission fluid ideally should be 180 degrees or less and the engine is going to be 195 or more in a newer truck. You should mount the cooler at least one inch from the radiator.

Great. That sounds like the answer I needed. There's plenty of room on that side to install it. Thanks for your help!
