Troubleshooting

Help - I've got a 93 Aerostar. My daughter turned on the a/c - after 5 minutes it went off. Checked the fuses and their ok, but now my turn signals, blower motor, rear defroster won't work. I've checked all fuses, none are blown and the fusable links have power, as we omed them. Even bought a new starter relay incase it was something stupid. Any ideas of other things to check??

The only common thing that I can find between the blower and the turn signals/rear window defroster is the ignition switch. One of the contacts on the ignition switch will send power to fuse 9 and 5 when in the run position. To check this turn the ignition swtich to run and check for power on each side of fuses 9 and 5. I believe that fuse 9 is a 50 amp fuse and fuse 5 is a 15 amp fuse. You should actually have more things not working, e.g. air bag diagnostics, electronic day/night mirror, backup lamps.

We've checked the fusebox and no power is going in to the #5 and #9 fuses links. I have a chilton book, but it does not describe what to check from here. Where would we start to find out why no power is going to those fuses?

You did check for power with the key in the run or on position (not start)? If so, then the next step would be to check for power on the gray/yellow wire on the ignition switch that goes to these fuses. There are three gray/yellow wires on the ignition switch. All three should have voltage with the key in the run position. If only two of them do then you have a bad ignition switch. I would make the check as close to the ignition switch as possible so that any bad connectors between the ignition switch and the fuses will not make you believe the switch is bad when it is really a bad connector. The repair cd I have shows that there are not any connectors between the two. I have found small discrpencies between repair manuals and what is actually installed before. Let me know how you do.

Where is the ignition switch located? Is it on the steering column? Is it the white plastic thing with wires going into it? Our chilton book is not very descriptive. Would you have a diagram?

The ignition switch is on the lower portion of the steering column. It is probably the thing you are describing with the wires going to it. It will have several wires. I have diagrams but I've never been able to figure out how to insert them into messages on this board. I could email them to you. Send me a private message with your email address if you want them.
