Exactly how did you calculate the mileage of the 90 mile trips?

My 0.02 USD worth . . .

My F250HD 4X4, 460/E4OD/4:10's and a Drake Welding lumber rack for reduced aerodynamics gets 7.5 mpg around town and 10 on the highway.

I'm sure a great deal of that lousy mileage is the tall stance and lumber rack. Oh well, it's a real man's work truck, not a mall cruiser.

YMMV

It wasn't exactly 90 miles but close. whatever the distance I drove from the gas station to the next then divided it by the fuel used.
so you retarted your ignition timing back to the factory 10* and your getting that good of mileage?
Well i looked back and I did advance the timing to 12. So i think the timing was at 14 for stock

Doing your mileage based on a 90 mile trip is NO way to check it. You need to fill your tank and then make that 90 mile run untill your tank is about empty and then fill it up then do you division and see if you are still getting that 16.7mpg,I am betting not. I have a 92 with the 5.8 that I bumped the timing to 12 on it and I still only get 12-14 average. I'm not calling you out I just have a hard time accepting that a 460 is pulling that kind of mileage, and if it truly is then start a thread that shows how you have your truck tuned so more guys can get that to.

I'm with you man, I'm having a really hard time believing that a 460 big block got 16mpg I had a 89 with straight piped exhaust and a pulling cam and it got 5mpg it sucked the fuel so bad I traded it for a cummins, but it would freakin scream from 0-100 haha!!

Ok I fill it up before I leave, I drive that 90 or so miles, right before I get into town I fill up before doing all my city driving. By the time I reach town, I'm sitting at 1/2 a tank or so. Idk if i wrote it wrong or what, but how is my method wrong?

ok so your telling us that you got 16 mpg on a 90 mile trip and when you returned from this trip you had a half a tank and you filled it completely up to check your milage. if this is true you either 1. have a gas guage that is lieing its tail off. or 2 you have a 11 gallon fuel tank.

i did the math and if you used half a tank in 90 miles that means at 16.7 miles per gallon you would have used 5.3892215568862275449101796407186 gallons.

Iversen I hate to tell you this but you had to of messed it up or just wrote it down wrong. Run 250 miles and then fill it up and see what kind of mileage you are getting at that point I betting it will be closer to the 11-12 mpg range. I have had 3 different 460's and the best I ever got was 11.6 with a tail wind now they were all 4x4's with beffy tires so im sure that did not help. Any ways best of luck.

Just out of curiosity, is this 90 mile trip into town mostly downhill? Do you get the same mileage on the way back? My '97 351W doesn't even get that kind of mileage.
