tranny not working
I have a 97 f250 4x4 with the e40d. The engine went bad and I had to tow it about 60 miles with a rope to repair it and we did so with the trans case in nuetral but we did tow it about 10 miles with the trans case engaged but the tranny in neutral. Well I got the engine running and went to drive it but now I get nothing from the transmission I have tried 2hi, 4hi, and 4 low. I have tried putting the trans in all gears including reverse and it is just like it is in park or neutral. What could be the problem? I am asuming there was some damage done with the tow but I don't know what to check first. The transmission fluid looks ok.

The reason you don't want the output shaft of the tranny turning in a tow is that all the lube and cooling for the internals comes from the tranny pump, which only the engine turns. Even though clutches and bands aren't engaged, they have some drag, and without ATF flowing through the plates, they can burn up, and this might have happened to you.
If you have proper line pressure, the tranny should engage via the shift lever if the clutches are OK. If line pressure is low, you probably have pump problems and the tranny will have to come out.
