Mountain driving updated
I just wanted to tell everyone that my trip went exceedingly well. My wife and I left Columbia South Carolina on Nov. 11 and we arrived at FT. Lewis on Nov 30. Thanks in no small part to you folks and your helpful replies, my '06 F250 6.0 powerstroke pulled my Montana 3400RL with absolutely zero issues for over 4300 miles and I never had to switch out of drive. I would like to thank especially the person who posted about using the engine brake on downhills, that piece of information was a blessing!!!
Now onto the trip itself, it was amazing. Our first extended stop was in Bloomfield New Mexico for 3 days where we went to Chaco Cultural Canyon. The ancient Indian ruins along with the Petroglyphs were absolutely stunning. We also went and saw the Aztec ruins,Salmon ruins, Shiprock, and 4 corners. Our base was a KOA.
Our second extended stop was in Williams, Arizona, where we camped at grand Canyon Ralroad for 2 nights. We took the railway to the Grand Canyon and walked the rim. I cannot describe this natural wonder adequately, all I can say is see this place if ever you are in Arizona.
Our last extended stay was Las Vegas. We stayed at the Nellis Airforce Base family camp for 8 days. This gem of a camp is absolutely amazing, with clean and well kept facilities, cable and wifi, and absolutely clear sky for those of us with sattelite dishes. we had a beautiful view of the hills, contrasted by a runway where we saw the aircraft take off from our rear picture window!!
We did the Hoover Dam tour, Hiked Red Rock Canyon, and walked the strip.
From Vegas it was time to get where we needed to go soo. we took I15 to Barstow, then turned north through Bakersfield where we turned west at Williams to 101. We stopped at a KOA just outside the Redwood forest.
The next day we continued north on 101 through the forest (amazingly beautiful country) into Oregon where we again stopped for the night, this time in a state park. I will say this, 101 is a very scenic route, there was this one instance where we came out of the forest, turned a bend in the road, and there was the Pacific Ocean, grandly crashing into the cliffs and off shore rocks. The next day we turned east toward Eugene and I 5 and arrived in FT Lewis (or JBLM) the following day.
All said and done, this trip was one of the best experiences of my life, in part thanks to all who replied in my original post "mountain driving"
