Hot oil

I have a '73 F-100, 360, 4-sp stick....
The oil gets so hot I can't touch the dip stick. It even smells hot and the oil pressure dropped about 15#.. Water temperature remains cool... The motor had a total rebuild by a professional builder about 20,000 miles ago...It makes no rapping sounds... The oil is clean ,to the full mark, and I changed the filter...Anybody have an idea what could be causing this hot oil... Thanks

Hot oil

oil is suposed to be hot.... It works best when hot... If it is burning then you have a problem, you have an oil cooler (like a tranny cooler) pipes that flow (if memory serves me right) on the drivers side near the bottom corner of the radiator .... Not to sure of where the location would be on a 73 360.... But if I were you I would take the cooler off and make sure it is not blocked up with gunk or anything else... Good luck.

Hot oil

I realize oil will get pretty hot but I've had this truck for over 20 years and know about every quirk it has and the oil is hotter than normal... It doesn't have an oil cooler...I don't smell any gas in the oil but even though it has only 1200 miles on the oil, I'm going to change it again tomorrow...The fact that the water temp is normal doesn't make any sense to me....[ Maybe because the new four core radiator is taking up the extra heat without showing up on the guage.]..???????

Jerry, what brand and weight oil are you using? Sometimes different brands will have a different odor......

Assuming the oil is circulating normally, I know of no reason for the oil to overheat like you describe. Normal oil temp is about the same as the coolant, around 180*, so it is way too hot to touch comfortably.

Hot oil

It could be due to tight clearances in your new engine. it would be nice if you had a way to measure the actual temperatrue. Maybe with the wife's candy thermometer (when she ain't lookin).

Hot oil

Friction and heat caused by combustion is what heats the oil, so I think beartracks is right on this one, that oil haveing to squeeze through small holes at a high volume can cause it to heat up a little more than normal, especialy if it is a heavy'r oil. First tell me the average temp outside how often you drive her and what weight and brand oil you are useing now. And then somone or I might be able to help.

Hot oil

I guess I mis-lead you guys on the rebuild...

It's got about 20,000 on the "new" motor but with a truck this old a couple years is still new to me...Sorry...

A week after I got the "new" motor back, I left for an Az., Fla., Pa., Az., circle pulling a 26' TT...
No oil pressure fluctuation...
Now I use it only for local short trips... I use Castrol straight 30, being we have no cold starts here in Az....I've used it in all vehicles except the P.S. diesel for years..
The temp here has been in the 70-80's..The candy thermometer is a good idea....
The Mrs doesn't make candy anyway.....

I use it to check the radiator temp.....

Another good thought is the odor of different oils.... Maybe Castrol is masking a gasoline smell....

I've had carburetor trouble and put a kit in it with a tune-up get it through our silly emission test....

Maybe the oil is contaminated with gas and I can't distingush it....It's not over full...
I don't think it would take much gas to thin the oil and cut down the lubricating properties, causing more friction, thus causing more heat .... ???? I'll know by tomorrow....Thanks again..

Hot oil

there ya go you just solved your own problem.
Change the oil and see what happens, if it is the same, you might want to find out whats going on with it.
Sounds like something is thinning out the oil.

If its gas that is a bad combination, that would really wear and tear on your new engine.
