Hey guys. Im really haveing a hard time making a decision. My dream truck is a 1973-79 ford pickup but i have fallin for my powerstroke, i have it up for sale for 3800 with everything ive done to it some say that is to little others say to much. My parents arent really helping me out so i figured you guys are my next family should i stick it out and keep a diesel or just get a truck for the body style.. i eont really do aot of pulling other tham the race trailer that my dads f-150 can pull just fine. But gets 12 mpg. Idk. I guess i just need some guidance thanks alot guys. Btw anyone want my powerstroke if i decide to sell.
The big difference you're going to see between the two is fuel mileage. You're probably getting mid to high teens with your PSD, if you go to a 73-79 vintage truck, you're going to be lucky to break into the mid teens with a carb'd V8.
I know where you're coming from thought. I had a 1970 F-100 with a 302 in it and that was a lot of fun. There is definitely a special place in my heart for those old trucks.
Yeah, Cummins is the 350 SBC of the diesel world. It's pretty meh-tastic in anything except a Dodge to me, as far as light duty trucks are concerned. Ford medium duty trucks were sold with Cummins engines for a while, so that's a different story.
Depends on what you want to do. A '70s truck is no daily driver, not in WI, anyway. They do carry a classic look (I think Fords were the best looking trucks of that era), and thanks to cr@ppy sheet metal used on all Fords back then, there are darn few still around. But the winters here, not to mention the rough roads the rest of the year, will take their toll on a classic truck if driven regularly, and replacement parts won't exactly be growing on trees.
Personally, I'd keep the PSD as a daily driver, and/or moneymaker, and put away the pennies for the '79 as the "special occasion" truck.
And unless it's really beat, or a plain white XL plastic seat "I am a Lineman for the County" work truck, your PSD is most likely worth a lot more than $3800. They regularly go in the $5000 and up range, mostly stock.

Im a lineman....
Just kidding. But good point. Your truck ought to be worth at least 5. The type of truck hes talking about go for 5 around here so yours should get that at least...
Thing is, I have a guy interested in trading me straight up for a 1977 fully restored with a 429 SCJ 4x4, Its a great truck, test drove it and everything. Im just getting a few more opinions on it. Its just sad to see my PS not get used for what its made for, and it is depressing i want to mod it so bad but then i remember i have no cash... Sucks not having a job at 17.
and with a rebuilt motor and tranny 43k ago i thought it would be worth more but no hits on it for 3,800. Body isnt in best shape though i think thats all people care about these days.
I went to my local scrap yard to scrap today and i saw a 70s era ford crew cab long bed. it wasnt beat up or had tons of rust just an older truck. But their policy is they dont sell stuff out of the yard anymore. but man id buy it just to put it on ebay.
But stick with the psd while looking for an older 70s truck then think about dropin a psd or a cummins cumapart in it.
Really? iv benn looking for a 73 - 79 cc. That body style is my dream truck as well. i have the money put aside, im just need to find one in fair condition. my plan is to make it a psd. i already have a parts psd truck, now i need the 73-79 cc.
ryan the psd is a good dd, i wouldnt imagine driving a redone 70s in the winter as a dd. just keep the psd for now. once its too rotted out to drive throw a 70s body on the psd chassis or the psd in the 79, Im sure iv seen a few guys on here do that. the 3500 you get for your truck wont really get you far in to restoring your dream truck, or at least the right way.
I know cory my dad restored a 1979 and then dropped a 460 in it, I know what all has to be done, But I might just keep my psd and wait for him to get sick of his truck and give to me then take the 79 body on psd frame like stated above. Thanks guys!
