Looking for a new brake proportioning valve for my 1983 F-150, 300 I6, AOD, A/C, 2 wheel drive, with dual tanks. The truck developed a leak at the RR wheel cylinder causing the valve to do it's job. The problem is that my parents owned the truck then, didn't know what the problem was (because the truck still stopped), and the valve froze in the default safety position. I have been unsuccessful at freeing it up.
I've been told the part has been discontinued by Ford, FMC doesn't list that year, and every parts store I have been to doesn't have them either. Does anyone have any information on this item?
You aren't kidding about the expensive part! I haven't pulled mine apart to try and clean it, as I'm not sure I can because it won't reset. But I will soon. I was hoping to find a new one someplace, but it looks as if a donor truck is in the near future. I've looked at an 85 and it was different, not sure why.
In any case, I was hoping someone might have a part number for it in case I can get lucky (which I doubt with this part).
I have the power brake system from an 85 f150 in my 82 f100. The 85 had a 302 and the 82 had a 300. I kept the proportion valve from 82 and have not had any problem at all.
Before you ask, Chris...yes, I typed it both ways...on PV and the Ford Dealer Parts Locator System: Nada. Dealer locator: The prices don't appear if it's typed E0.
What the hell am I talking about? 1950/60/70/80/90: If the 2nd digit in the part numbers prefix is a ZERO, it can also be typed as the letter O.
So, it could be E0TZ-2B257-A or EOTZ-2B257-A as it depends on how the real live person typed the number into the system. When looking for parts, the prefix should be typed both ways.
My 'net connection is exceedingly slow right now so I'm in no hurry to go verifying your findings, Bill.
I'll take your word for it.
I've found these things before but I'm guessing for different years.
Yaga: LMC Truck might be able to help ya,...
There was a thread not real long ago in which I had put up some pictures of a somewhat-disassembled valve from my F350 but I don't remember which forum and I can't seem to find the thread.
I have no idea what the differences are (and I really doubt Bill will know) about all we know for certain is they have different part numbers (which means they're different parts for some reason).
The valves are calibrated for each different truck. Different brake options, different engines, make different proportions of weight front to rear, and different braking front to rear. The valves are calibrated for this.
That's all well in good when you can get the correct part. I believe eventually people are going to have to convert over to the racing style system, with no proportioning valve, just a manually adjustable inline valve with the rear brakes and adjust it to prevent the rear locking up.
I don't know when they started it, but my 89 doesn't have a proportioning valve, it has a RABS system, which is a valve inline to the rear, and speed sensor in the rearend, and a circuit board to control it all. It's the same situation with mine, the system worked good when new, but is now old and parts are hard to find and/or expensive. Most people like me bypass this system, and am now running straight 60's style brakes with no proportioning at all. It works ok, and is better than buying a new truck.
Chris - Thanks for the link. I'll have to look at it again later as I was looking at it on my phone earlier. (Isn't it amazing what you can do on your phone these days?)
Dave - I'm glad that my truck doesn't have any computerized components on it other than my DSII (which really isn't a computer). In fact, I only have one vehicle that isn't under warranty that is fully computerized and I have fun keeping up with it. I'm just glad I went to automotive school and learned all the fun computer stuff. Are new vehicles good? Yes. Are they meant to last? No. That is why I like messing with our older trucks/cars as we will always be able to make them work. Period.
Federal law states you can't downgrade a brake system. Proportional valves are part of the safety system of the truck so it has to have it to be legal. Makes it difficult when they totally discontinue the part with no aftermarket support at all.
I went to a junkyard for mine. I called ahead to make sure they had one. They quoted me a price of $20, and they pulled it for me. I got them to give me a guarantee that it would work. They really didn't want to, but I told them all I was asking for was not to get it home and installed only to find out it was bad or defective. So, they agreed to give me another one if it didn't work. I've had it on for 2-3 years with no problems. My suggestion would be to hit the junkyard for a replacement.
Yaga - I have one on an 82 that had a 351W, C6, 2WD, and dual tanks. Shoot me a PM, if you've gotten to the level of posts that let you do that, or an email (janeyandgary@gmai.com) if you are interested.
Also have one from an '85, but according to ND that one won't work.
