I scanned my girlfriend's '99 F-250 SuperDuty V-10 w77k miles and found a P0401 code.
The truck has been idling rough and missing for a few months, but no check engine light. I replaced the spark plugs and the old ones looked clean, but well worn.
The truck seemed to run better for a day or so, then the check engine light came on and it started running rough again
The P0401 code means 'Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected'
Does anyone know the correct troubleshooting procedure for this error?
Is this a common problem on the V-10, it seems to be on other Ford products.
Well she took it to the dealer today and this is what they recommended:
"Customer states check engine light on, Diag EEC, Monitor tests, DPFE sensor out of range, cylinder balance tests show #6 misfire (no MIL for this though) Needs coil and plug."
"Also note engine has Bosch plugs (just put them in because Autozone was out of Motorcraft) have seen a lot of problems with Bosch, recommend Motorcraft plugs (add $200.00)

Thank you for your input. Does anyone know where to get discounted OEM Ford parts via mail order or Internet (preferrably from a dealer that does mail order)?
I'd replace the coil & plug on #6 yourself and see what happens.
Mine was running rough and it turned out to be #9 coil.
I happen to think that it was the silicone crap that the body shop sprayed all over the engine to make it shiny for me when I picked it up. But I have no way of proving it...
Thing is though, it never set the light. The light sets for emissions stuff. Look in your manual and verify the length of warranty.
