It's not a lack of understanding. That truck just doesnt do well in the mud vs the Ford I have. They both have the same tires (size, make tread pattern/except one is 17" rim and the other is a 16"). I have never been stuck in the Ford and have 3 out of 5 times in the Dodge. None of the times being stuck were anything I wouldnt drive through in the Ford either. There is maybe something about the weight distribution in the Dodge or something. The 444E weighs 1000lbs and I know the tranny in it is over 200lbs. So its not a lopsided issue either.
unless you have a front posi, or a front locker, your 7.3 has no advantage over your cummins powered truck, except the entire truck is lighter. that, however, can be advantageous or disadvantageous depending on the terrain you are trying to make it through. the bottom line is, there is no such thing as a diesel that is capable in mud unless it has huge tires and the driver doesnt care about slingin mud all over the place. this isnt an opinion btw. . .its a well-known fact. bein that the truck is lighter, your 7.3 is actually more lopsided than the dodge.

i wouldnt ever say your dodge isnt the truck that the ford is, i'm inclined to agree actually. would i take a cummins over a 6.0? definately, good choice. would i rather have the ford? besides their crappy suicide doors, i'd much rather have a 6 speed cummins powered ford, whether its old or new. i still dont see how your ole ford could be "more robust" with a C channel frame vs the dodge's boxed (the only thing that dodge has done right has been their stout frames).

i couldnt agree more. the dodges have been junky for quite some time, and have a lot of work to do in order to overcome the horrible reputation that its built. to shed that reputation, it will not only take a quality built truck, but years and years of time.
my point was that the dodge getting stuck has absolutely nothing to do with "dodges being junk". the axles/drivetrain are virtually identical to whats in the fords, and are very nice pieces. but, of course, theyre not dodge (except for the late model trucks), which further validates my point that it has nothing to do with the dodge parts bein junk.
I just took a hub assembly from my D50ttb spares and stuffed it onto a Dodge 250, only the snap rings were different, all the splines matched. Now as to Diesel 2wd traction being awful, I have two more votes, my pal with a Duramax and my F350 dually PSD, both are just awful in snow or slick going in 2wd. Thinking overly nose heavy is a liability.

The trucks are within 250lbs of each other. The Ford has the IFS and the Dodge doesnt. The Ford does excellant in mud. I have never had another 4x4 do as well as it does off road or in the snow.
