Hey Guys new to the forum I'm getting ready to purchase a new or newer F350. I admit I havent searched for a topic on this and theirs probably many. I'm trying to figure out which rear axle I should go with. I tow a 5000# trailer fairly regularly and plan do get the diesel. I have no idea what the numbers mean anyone care to explain or identify the best rear end?
5000 pounds is a medium load. A diesel engine with a 3.73 or even a 3.55 gear ratio will work fine. A diesel isn't really needed, a gas engine will handle that load fine. I tow 8000 pounds with a 5.4L V-8 and 3.73 gears.
The number means that for every 3.73 turns of the drive shaft, the wheels turn once. Correctly, it should be written as 3.73:1. The higher the first number, the more mechanical advantage (or torque multiplication) but a higher number means the engine spins faster for the same speed of the truck.
Thanks Redford for the explanation, I always wondered that. For me Diesel is the only consideration, since I live in a rural area my mileage will be higher. I am a contractor so I will be towing much more than my 5000lb tool trailer on occasion. The occasional skid steer, and sky-lift for example.
If you are looking for fuel mileage, get a 2007 and older diesel. The 2008+ engines have high fuel consumption because of all the pollution control stuff.
