I bought a 93 f-150 4X4 with a 302 motor. The motor has a threw rod and the block is trashed. I was was thinking about putting a 351W in it, but I have three questions before I make up my mind.
1. Would I be better to stay with a 302 for the MPG?
2. If I did change what would I have to change with it, ie heads , motor, mounts, fly wheel, and computer?
3. I can get a 351 that is in a 1988 F-250 2wd that needs to be rebuilt. Would it work in an 1993 4wd and if so what problems am I looking at?
.
I know these are smiple question to you guys, but I am not up on ford trucks yet as I am on MGB's.
i believe everything on your 302 should work with your 351w as they are of the same design...just check things like a gasket set for the 88 351 and one for the 93 302 and see what is different. And then i would go with 351 if everything will bolt up easy enough for you. and then rebuild the 302 and throw into one of those MGB's hehehe...
I just have a couple of questions.
Are you sure that it is a 351 Windsor and not a 351M?
Have you looked for a 302/5.0?
Is this 351 a really good deal i.e. free?
Have you checked out Crate engine prices?
If the answer to the first is yes then you should be all set. The dimensions are the same as the 5.0. They are identical except for heads. The height is a little higher but not much. The motor mounts should be in the same place but I will look at my Chiltons later. If the computer has to be swapped grab it from the 250. Remember to take everything else, pumps starters etc. If you want to know if they interchange you can find out at the MotorCraft website. Once you look up a part you can see what other vehicles that it goes on.
there was no 351M in 88, Ford phased it out in late 82. The only problems would be the flywheel/flexplate and tranny. The motor mounts might also need to be changed.
The motor mounts are the same. One thing that is different for sure is the exhaust. You will need the Y-pipe off the 351 as the 351 is wider and taller due to the higher deck height for the longer stroke. You will need the PCM out of the truck with the 351 in it as well. The transmission is the same as far as bolt pattern goes...it will bolt up. Your accessories such as a/c compressor, p/s pump etc will all bolt on. You'll just need a longer belt off a 351.
It's an easy swap especially if you have a donor truck to take parts off.
Hey Racerguy,
If the donor truck was the same year as his truck, would he still need the PCM out of it? I'm looking at doing the same swap with my 93 F-150 4wd. Thinking about getting a 351 out of the same year or later. Does this still apply? Thanks.
The only tme this swap sucks is if your going to use an AOD. Ford never put a AOD behind a 351 so you won't find a computer for it. Most people say you'll need a 351 computer-maybe so. A buddy put twin turbos and mass air on his 88 351 F250. He runs an stock A9L computer out of a 5.0 mustang.
My 93 has the E4OD, and according to the salvage yard I was talking to the 93 I was thinking about taking the 351 out of also had the E4OD. Ford never put the E4OD behind a 351? Can't they handle it?
with the 135W. Yes Ford put E4OD's behind 351W's. As far as the computer, that issue has been argued, cussed, discussed and beat like a dead horse. That's kinda like asking "what is the best truck or engine Ford ever built" . In my opinion, if I had the donor, I 'd use the original computer. Two other options are to use an M5OD if it's not going to be used to lug extemely heavy loads, in that case try to find a ZF. That is the one used behind the diesels. I'm not sure about the bolt pattern on the ZF bellhousing mating to the 351W though. Hope this helps.
