Again thanks grey I have learned something else. I did not know that at all! Also learned that that engine makes 255 ft/lbs of it torque around 1400 RPM that is astonishing to me. With the horsepower peak around 2200-2300 RPMs..... Which is credited to the long stroke? Man I love this engine even more.
Yep... had someone ask a while back about "stroking" a 300. Well, the short (or long depending how you look at it) answer is, "you don't" Ford "stroked" the 240 and gave us the 300.

The 300 is the best engine I've ever had on the trail......it is awesome.......torque is right where you need it in the woods.......it's a low end pull monster !
Well, when you have an engine that reaches peak HP and torque down around the 2200-2300 rpm range it makes that 3.55 axle gearing behave more like 4.11's behind a V8. (Of course that's why a lot of the trucks with the 300 got the 3.08 axle gearing instead of the 3.55's).
It's really only unusual to those of us used to typical gassers. Diesel folk find this pretty typical.
Mine has 3.08.......with 33" tires.....pulls them fine on the street.......but I need a lower gear for the trail.....wish I had that granny first.......my mazda 5pd is not low......I am getting 3.55's.....found the front and rear for $350.....according to my calcs..... I will net the samr ratio as stock with stock tires .......otherwise I'd go lower....not going above 33's....so won't need lower gears
That is the same conclusion I reached. Even though I have a brand new set of 4.11's I don't think I am going to bother installing them for reasons we are discussing.
