Haha the frame was done by a friends dad who used to build frames for race cars. I am not going to be putting out much more than stock horsepower on the motor and I don't plan on using the 4x4 unless I have to. So you think I could get away with running the D44 atleast for now if I cant find/afford the D60 Joe?
What size tires again? Anything over 35s will be severely pushing it. Not just u-joints and shafts but most likely bearings and balljoints will hate life. The housing itself will be fine.

if u cant find a d60 for a good price. yea a d44 will work just fine with the 36s. depends on what cummins u have but a stock start a 160 no intere cooled to the last 12 witch is only around 225 hp so i belive if u dont go crazy u be just fine try to find a 79 high pioin dh d44 they can have a 3000 plus weight rating with the 8 lug pattern and pick up a match 10.25 stearlin for the back.
I ran a d44 with those tires on my Bronco for a good long while, never broke an axle shaft. Had a severely worn u joint though, replaced with chromo shafts at that point and never had a problem.
But, I had a 400 with oil vacuum and about 38.527 hp and 68 tq, so I didn't have enough power to break anything. With the weight of the cummins and the tq.. Just don't crank the wheels and mash on the go pedal and you'll be fine. Keep an eye on wheel bearings/ball joints too.
i know the Cummings is a heavy bastage but i ran 38 TSL's with both a 351m400 and then swapped to a 460 i broke a long side shaft due to a hard landing on 1 tire after 2-3 feet of air and my foot still planted in the throttle not to mention a welded front, that also caused a broke pinion and all but yea...
the only weights about 900 to 950 fuel dress my idi weights about 1200 dressed ran it like that for two years never had a problem with bearings or balljoints
I dont right now...I am in the middle of doing body work on my 94 just trying to get some info on what I need for the 85 to get her all back up and ready to drop the cummins in it.
Read the thread. It seems most agree the D44 will be fine with the cummins and isn't frowning on it at all. The problem comes when 1/2 ton components are used in applications that could probably use beefed up 3/4 and 1 ton stuff. Just like it may seem everyone hates the ttb, but for stock stuff up to 35" tires its fine, just don't romp on it. Breaking stuff sucks that's why everyone tries to go for the 60.
