I have a '78 F150 4x4 with the 400M engine and factory 2BBL Motorcraft carb.
The engine is pretty original with some minor exceptions being an alternator and power steering pump, so it runs good without any problems.
Now I am just looking to expand my knowledge here, not sure if I want to rip apart my original equipment yet, just would like to get some good info from the experts.
I've done some reading and in my very limited knowledge of how to make your car faster, adding a bigger/4bbl carb would not only boost horsepower but make the car/truck faster via more power.
So what are some other pro's and con's to swapping in a nicer 650cfm 4bbl carburator?
Does anyone have experience with a 4bbl carb swap on a 400M? If so please share your thoughts and how good/bad it was for the truck, etc.
the changeover will also require an intake swap to an aftermarket one from edelbrock or the likes. By itself that change won't equate to much of a gain in power. Couple that with a free flowing exhaust and headers you might see 20 hp. Digging deeper would mean a cam change but by that point you would be far better off IMHO to drop a 460 in and be done with it as the cost of the mods will never get you the same level of torque and horsepower.
Hope this helps !
i have a 400m with the edelbrock intake manifold...it lets me put a 4 barrel on there but untill she passes smog thats a no can do.
As for the intake, seeing as it is required for this mod, i love the edelbrock one went on great and works very well i am very pleased with the product.
