any idea why the rear door child lock would decide to turn itself on? every once in a while sombody will go to get out and they are locked in. it seems to be getting more and more common lately, and that switch is kinda hard to move. i dont know how it is setting itself.
I remember a few people talking about this (not sure if it was this forum) and they actually had to put something in there to keep it from moving. Even though it seems difficult to move, it can get caught on things and would set itslef. I have not had the issue but remember others talking about it. Hope it helps some, Mike
take the child lock cap off and spray it down with WD-40 and moving rapidly up and down and spary again, i spray mines down and hasnt done it for a couple of months now
well I know that in my expedition, in the owners manual, there is a procedure to do to get them to stay unlocked. I had the same issue when i first bought this vehicle and found the how to procedure to get them to stay unlocked. Hope this helps in your case.
Had this problem with my '01. Bought the truck used. It was not an intermittent condition. A real PITA, too. Happened with the passenger door only. I found a short and fat bolt in the shop one day and finger tightened it in the gap so that the child lock could not engage. Did this seven years ago. Never thought about checking the manual for a child lock override, but I will now.
My Expy does this same thing, will check out the owners manual tonight. I just thought it was an extra child lock thing the truck did. Once you open the door so many times the child lock engages.
aye, passenger side really upsets me at times...anytime I go to move it tho it won't move w/o a bit of pressure. I chalked it off as my oldest daughter getting her school bag or something caught on it..since she likes the passenger side seat better..guess for its 2 inches of recline lol?
My owner's manual said to disengage the child lock, flip the switch to "unlock" ...DUH !
I'll try the WD-40 fix first then if that fails i'll be jamming a something in there.
Well for my 98 expedition, the owners manual states on page 50 and 51 the process to set up if you want them to be auto or manual. In my manual, its the set up right after the setup process for the rest of the regular door locks. Not sure if it is a short term thing they only tried with some expedition or what but all i know is that when mine( the child ones) are set, they will go to lock feature everytime I am assuming when you take off as it works for the other door locks. Sorry for you and everyone else that has to throw items in there to fix it the way you want it to be.

I think you are confusing auto locks with the child safety locks. Two different things. Auto locks work on the lock mechansim, the child safety locks disable the interior pull handle so even if the door is unlocked it cannot be opened.

Well its pretty neat knowing that mine change by themselves depending on how the set up is, and as i stated in my earlier post, I said they are not related to the REGULAR door locks. Sometimes it seems that people read too damn fast and pass over info
I actually read it a few times to try and understand what you were saying. Not my fault it isn't clear. The fact that you talk about child locks "go to lock everytime you take off" would suggest some sort of confusion on how they work. They have nothing to do with the motion of the vehicle. When properly functioning child safety locks are always on or always off, and have nothing to do with the auto lock feature. In your earlier post you talk about "following a procedure" to get them to turn off which also cleary points to confusion on your part. The procedure in your manual is for the auto lock feature. The instructions in your manual for the child locks says flip the switch to turn them on or off.
I owned my truck less than 24 hours before I disabled the auto lock. Annoying feature, in my opinion. The child lock malfunction on the passenger side rear was independent of the auto lock. It happened with the auto lock in override. I suspected at the time that cheap plastic, poor design, door slam, road vibration or all of the above caused the child lock to engage on its' own. Never was proud of the mickey mouse solution I came up with, but didn't have the problem again either.
