300 sixes don't have timing chains, like other engines, they are gear driven, cam to crank.
If its idling rough, you've either got a vacuum leak or you are running really really rich and the motor is flooding. Possibly your coil is bad and causing the misfire. Its also possible that the pickup inside the distributor is going also, as this will cause a weak spark/no spark condition and a very rough idle, like its idling on 4 cyls instead of six.
To check for a vacuum leak, get some carb cleaner, or just some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it on all of your vacuum lines and around the intake/carb.
The carb cleaner will increase the idle of the truck ,and the soapy water should be drawn in so you'll see the bubbles/water dissapearing.
As for adjusting the carb itself, it has one main idle adjustment screw on the passenger side of the carb, facing towards the inner fender. You need to adjust this till you get the best idle possible at the highest rpm. This is called lean best idle.
Hope this helps ya!
