Angry High Oil Consumption

Hi all,
I have a 94 ford ranger with the 3.0L motor and 133,000 miles. It uses oil like crazy. Some times I only get 250 miles to quart. Sometimes I get 600 miles before the check oil light comes on.

I have no external leaks. The coolent looks good and doesn't have a oil slick on it. The engine doesn't smoke.

I had a pinging problem and the oil problem a year ago, so I replaced the intake manifold gaskets. It didn't really solve either problem.

So where is the oil going?

Also, the pinging. Anyway to stop this? Higher octane gas doesn't help, I can't find a intake leak, and I just replaced the fuel filter. Spark timing is right on. Truck only pings under load.

One last thing, the release bearing is making noise and it's getting hard to put her in gear...how much time does it take the average guy to drop the tranny, replace the bearing, and put it all back together (bleeding the clucth is a B!tch with the Ford flawed M.C.

Do a search for "pinging" and you'll come up with tons of threads about the subject. Lots of "cures" including someone that said Marvel Mystery Oil worked for them.

Ya, I used the search for all of these topics. The solutions presented for the pinging are mixed and some are even contradictory. I will try the MMO.

The main thing is the oil consumption. It sure doesn't seem like its burning it, but I only get a drop or two overnight from a leak. So it's either burning a lot of oil, or pushing it out only when the car is in motion (and then there should be a huge mess in the engine bay.)

Any other ideas

Well, if it's not leaking it (per se) and if it's not in the oil then it's gotta be going out the tailpipe (rings, cyl bore, valve guides, etc). Time for a compression test and also take a good look at the plugs. There is a slim chance that someone has installed the wrong pcv valve so rule that out too.

In a truck that new (relative to my '85), I would also suspect the PCV valve. The older engines, like mine, had ordinary Neoprene valve seals, and they failed predictably. Mine burns lots of oil because of that. I would assume that later engines have much better valve seals (DuPont Viton, or similar??). Does anyone know this for sure?? Later engines with all the sophisticated smog equipment can burn quite a bit of oil, before a REALLY BLUE CLOUD starts appearing out the tailpipe. So you could indeed be burning it.

Replace the PCV valve. While you're at it replace the hoses going to the PCV and make sure the system is working properly (sucking air). Next thing I'd do to it put some fuel injector cleaner in the gas, using the kind that will de-carbon the combustion chamber and valves. Most people don't know it but a dirty motor will burn oil due to things not sealing properly. Next, I'd put some motor flush in the oil and idle it for 5 minutes to clean that part of the engine. Drain the oil (and motor flush). Now put in some Castrol or Valvoline high milage oil in the higher viscosity (I use 10w30 in my Ranger that normaly calls for 5w30). These high milage oils will help seal leaks and slow oil consumption. Drive it for a few weeks and see if the oil loss has slowed. If not, try adding a can of Restore. I've heard wonders about that stuff. Let us know how you do.

Well, this weekend I changed out the noisey throwout bearing, but when I pulled the tranny the needle bearing and the clutch were shot also. I would of had the whole thing done in less than 4 hoursm but the needle bearing's outhousing was all that was left in the crank, and it wouldn't come out for the love of pete. I ended up using a chisel and hammer to crack it and peal it out (it dulled the chisel a few times, that thing is made of some seriously hard steel.)

The PCV valve rattles and it sucks air. I added a bottle of MMO is the tank to help with the pinging, and it did help. I need to do it again to see if it will finish the problem.

I'm still upset with the oil consumption, I'm going to retorque the intake maniold if the pulgs are oily, and if it's loose it's getting a dose of locktight. If that doesn't solve it then I'll use an oil based motor flush.

I'll post up after this weekend

I seem to remember comming across a TSB concerning pinging on the 3.0; I recall that they had a new coil pack for them. I'm not sure thought if it applies to your year. Maybe someone can enlighten on that one.
