I have an 89 f150 4X4 with a 5.0 5 spd. Once in a while when it is cold when I drive it and let off gas and press the clutch the RPM stays the same as before pressing the clutch and will drop if I tap the throttle any ideas? Thanks in advance, James
Nope, it's not dieseling. That's your automatic choke working. When you tap on the gas, you tell it to stop enriching the fuel mixture for the cold air, so it does. Sometimes they "stick", but it sounds like yours is working properly.

It's an '89, which means it's an EFI - no choke.

Your throttle cable or throttle linkage or cruise cable is hanging up. Pull the cruise off the throttle cable and see if it still does it. If it does, look in your owner's manual for the correct lubricant for the throttle cable, but you'll probably find it's not very expensive and a LOT easier to replace the cable with a new Ford one. Only 3 screws hold it in, so it's easy to remove/replace.
Thanks for the replies, I will have to look into it better. I have sprayed out the throtle body (where the air comes in) and the spring and linkage a couple times with carb cleaner (had some carbon build up on it and it stopped it for a while then back to square one. It also wants to idle erratically once in awhile when cold (500-800 back and forth for a couple times) so I was almost thinking maybe a tps but there is no service engine soon light comming on. Any more replies would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, James
