What is this accessory?

Not on a Ford, but a beautiful truck nonetheless. I'm stumped as to what these cans on the side of the cowl are, I suspect they are something to do with either farming or fishing.... They aren't an air cleaner as I first thought, they stack on each other and are held on with the steel yoke. Look like fuel cans, giant sterno pots.

I wonder if it's some kind of horn. Seems maybe holds air because of the rubber grommets. And the handle, I wonder if it screws down or maybe pulls up to release the air to make a horn.

Flares sounds right! Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that.

BTW that truck was in just unbelievable condition. I don't think it got much use, and must have been garaged all its life, I could tell it hadn't been rusty and restored. Look at the lines on the hood and fenders, just like factory must have been.

Great truck!!

I have a couple of the early road flares. Mine are the ones that are more rounded on the bottom. Thats pretty cool, I've never seen them in a holder like that before.

I was gonna say red Christmas bells on a green truck. Pretty festive.

I think the truck is very nice. I don't know if it's just me, or doesn't it seem like these old trucks are passing old cars in popularity as "decoration". I was in Pigeon Forge a few weeks ago. There's 2 additional old farm trucks sitting outside some attractions. Thanks for sharing. It looks perfect.

here in our area they were called 'smudge pots' from the soot the kerosene created.... always saw them at excavations and road hazards or construction. Hadn't seen one in 40 years till Cruzin the Coast and this sweet old truck... had to get up close and look... all the ones I'd ever seen were round and had a convoluted shell...

John, in addition to being convoluted, were the shells also concave? Jag
