Finally got my exaust on the rig and some crap popped up. The rig runs great but when I shut it down it wont start unless I retard and advance the timing (retard and advance to the same position). Once started everythings fine. Was thinkn that the exaust was too close to the fuel line causing vapor lock but why will it start if I mess with the timing? Once the rig has cooled it will start w/ no probs. Ive heard probs like this but no solutions.
Can you tell me what color wires you have connected to the distributor coming from the MSD box? If you have the purple wire from the MSD box connected to the purple wire of the distributor you have just retarded your timing by 20 degrees.
I didnt get the MSD box. I bought the MSD billit dizzy (drop in). There is a orange and red wire going from the dizzy to the MSD coil (Orange on- and red on +). I was told that there is no need for the computer if I had the billit dizzy.
Ok , Have you checked the voltage going to the billet dist. It must be a full 12 volts. If you used the original hot wire that was hooked up to the factory distributor you will probably have around eight volts. It takes a full 12 volts to run the MSD.
The MSD dizzy had its own wiring, the only stock wiring left going to the coil is the ing. module and the ing. Everyting is reading 12v. Like I said everything was running fine until the exaust was installed.
I'm having the same problem "won't start when warm"except this is for a 88' 351efi. I think that it could be the exhaust being to close to the starter. I'm yet to find a metal starter heat sheild. I don't know if your starter is in th same place or not but where mine sits its like 1" from the exhaust. Does anyone know if ceramic wrap will help with the heat go through the pipe and not hit the area of the starter?
hope this helps!
You know, I have an 89 Bronc that has a similar problem with the warm start. If I drive for a while and stop...say to get go-go juice, I have to push the accell. down a bit while cranking to get her going. Kinda like you would with a carb.'d motor. Cold starts are perfect though.
I'm guessing it's a heat/starter issue. I'm looking at fabbing some type of heat plate to cover the starter.
As for the MSD issue...I have no idea because I don't have MSD yet. I'm wondering if it's really worth the money or not?! Anyone?
