Strange noise while under acceleration

... put a post on here quite a while ago about the same thing. It sounds like a tin can full of screws being shaken and it only happens while i am accelerating. as soon as i let off the throttle it went away and then would not come back. i think i may have to crawl under the truck tomorrow and see if i can't find the culprit.

Same with my truck (sound coming from passenger's side)-it goes into the shop tomorrow. They rattled off what the part was, I don't remember but will report back in a day or two. Chris

Im going to say IWEs. A loss of vacuum will make the IWEs want to engage. Vacuum drops when under load or acceleration. Common problem on the 04-08s and it appears you have a similar issue.

Integrated Wheel End - a component of the 4wd system.

This applies to the 04-08s, but it's worth a read:

thorough write up indeed, which is now making me second guess what i thought i knew about my truck. After doing some looking around i found the mentioned vacuum lines at the wheel hubs. I was under the impression that my wheel hubs were always locked into the front drive line.

so if i do have a vacuum line leak and that is the cause, what is the noise i'm hearing?

It is trying to engage the hub while in 2wd.
If you put it in 4wd you shouldn't hear the noise.

You're hearing the partial engagement of the 4wd. The rattling is the splines grinding. Like previously stated the noise should go away when you select 4wd.

forgot to mention that this is a very rare occurrence. before last night's occasion, this problem hadn't happened since last December. Last night it happened for approx. 3 seconds before i let off the gas and then after i reapplied the throttle i couldn't get it to duplicate.

Possible heat shield rattling. Stones get between them and the metal and rattle but usually only at certain rpm's. That was my issue anyway.

Well just got word from the dealership that they are replacing the exhaust manifold gasket. They feel that is where my noise is coming from. We will see. I felt like it was more of an arc sound then exhaust but what do I know. I'll report back on the results of their work. Chris

Thank goodness for the ESP I bought. It was not just the gasket but the manifold also. Got my truck back and all is well. My cost was $100 but I was told the job (parts & labor) was close to $900. Chris

Side note-had my front breaks done (pads/rotors turned) also. They were the original pads both front & rear after 67K miles. Now that's Ford tough, the rear pads are still better then 50%. But I did wear out 7 pairs of boots stopping this thing. As you can tell I'm still a happy camper with this Ford truck. Chris
