I can't see how swapping out both axles and hoping they fit and then using wheel spacer/adapters is better or more cost effective then fixing the TTB.
I get that you want a solid axle, but this all sounds like a terrible idea when it would be too easy to find a proper D60 to fit with a bit more searching.
I totally agree with you on this Edgethis, but cobbling is soooo much fun!!!!!!
I totally agree with you...just wish I could find one here locally.... like i said this would not be a big deal at all if I had another vehicle.Hopefully some time on the phone tomorrow at lunch will have one turn up here over this next work week.
Thanks for the info that is what I needed to know. Well I hope I can find one here over this week before the weekend. Any of you guys have any luck with looking for these in a junkyard search engine or database by chance? I have cruised ebay and craigslist and have not found anything yet....
I'm in Colorado, too, and I haven't seen one of those axles for under 1K, and I've been looking for over 2 years. They're like hen's teeth around here.
well i have been finding them left and right with 4:10's in them. I have found two in the state for 3:55's and both are at $1200.... There is an old king pin out of an 86 on craigslist but I do not want to go backwards with age...just want to do this once right!
11 years and swapping out a rear to match the front is what kept me away from the King pin axle.... I hope the one I am getting does not prove to have any issues...which is wishful thinking but never the case.
Other then the gearing, there's no reason you'd have to swap rear axles. Even then, you could always get the axle and just not use 4wd until you have a chance to regear, that helps spread the cost out a bit.
Ok... I put the D60 axle up on stands after getting it home last night and 3 questions arose. Its a 97 BJ axle out of a 350.
First will D50 TTB Knuckles and spindles fit on the D60?- I have new ball joints/ rotors/pads/calipers <3k miles on the D50 I do not just want to trash.
If not.... How about calipers and rotors? Are they interchangable?
Thirdly, the axle did not come with hubs/ I have my warns out of the D50 that the guy told me would fit.... He said out of a 44 they would not but out of a 50 they would. Is this true?
I can do the bearing and ball joints on the 60 quick enough. I just would like to keep the project as simple as possible without replacing calipers/pads/rotors if I have almost new ones on the truck. The donor axle has been sitting for a while and is rusted to **** even for a Colorado axle
I will be putting moog BJ's in if the hubs are not interchangable, and only will swap them if thdey ae of equal strength. I figure I should just rebuild the entire axle from the inside out and spend Sunday putting it under the truck.
Also, I have the track bar bracket for the frame, I need to still find a track bar.... But where the hell does it bolt up to on the axle?
If nothing is interchageable here is my parts list....
Wheel bearings/seals
Upper and lower ball joints
Calipers
Rotors
Pads
Pinion Seal
Leaf Bushings/swaybar bushings.
Leaf U bolts
Track Bar
