10 BTDC is factory specification. Many here have bumped the base timing to 12-16 degrees depending on your engine condition, fuel and location (elevation). I run 15 on my 1992 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine and E4OD transmission.
According to the book. I didn't have to take anything off. Because its a non vaccumm distributor and the module takes care of it.. My timing gun didn't work .so I freaking had to just to turn the distributor until the knock went away and the engine smoothed out. and the smoke went away. Haven't drove it yet ill find out in the am
The spout connection disconnects the computer, so the base timing can be set. If it's not pulled out, the computer keeps trying to change the timing as you turn the dizzy. on my 93 it is a grey plug near the TFI module on the left fenderwell. I'm not sure if the TFI is still on the dizzy or not in 91. I don't remember what year it was moved. It doesn't seem to mention in my Chiltons manual or the Haynes manual. Do a search on this site threr are many posts on timing including on advancing it to add more power.
