This is a problem a lot of folks have been having. The truck cranks slow when it is hot and must cool down for 30min before it will crank again. I have a DI ignigtion system on my 89 Bronco 302L. My feeling is the timing is to advance. I do not have a timing marker on the truck and cant find TDC. I have tried to do the finger blown out of #1 spark plug but I continue to have the same problem. I know this is not the most accurate method but I want to avoid removing the upperintake manifold and the valve cover to be able to see the compression stroke. I have replaced all of the usual components involved with starting so I feel this is the source of the problem. Can someone help me with this annoying problem. Thanks
first of all, what do the timing and having your starter crank the engine slow have in common? if your battery is cranking your engine slow maybe its not charged up or maybe you need new cables to the battery or starter.
if you want an easier way to find top dead center how about a compression tester and turning the engine over via the crankshaft bolt. when it hits its highest pressure your at top dead center. take all the spark plugs out to make it easier to turn over.
Odds are your timing hasn't changed at all. I'll second the vote on the starter and ground cables to the battery. Corrosion INSIDE these cables can cause extremely high resistance with a resulting voltage drop between your battery and the starter. The resistance increases with heat! Just a thought.........and it's cheap. Cut a bit of insulation off of the cable near the terminal...if it's greenish and powdery, change'em both.
