I have an 84 Bronco with the 300cid, and have completely de-smogged it.
Question is, how much of an effect is this going to have on the electronic ign (EEC), and would it be better to swap the EEC dizzy out for an earlier (and IMHO more dependable) point style dizzy? Thus totally taking the computer out of the loop so to speak.
My thinking is that without the computer and sealed electronics, there is less problems with component failure and much easier servicablity in the field. just a thought....
Did your truck have the feedback carb with an O2 sensor? When I see EEC I think computer inside the passenger compartment. If you're talking about the Duraspark module on the driver's side under the hood I'd keep it. Points are simple and reliable but the DSII system works really well. I used some washers and grommets to raise mine up a bit to help keep it a little cooler. Otherwise, DS modules are pretty bulletproof, plus cheap and plentiful at the yard if you wanted to carry a spare.
Since there is no computer your dist is running at base timing and if its the original carb its probably not working very well. The popular swap is a DSII system and a non computer controlled carb.
BTW even though they weren't around long some of the feed back carb systems produced outstanding highway gas mileage when they were working. My Quadrajet and Carter BBD seemed to work the best.

Baron and Rikard...... Yes it is currently the orig. EEC system, and yes it runs at base timing only.(although I drove it home from Seattle<400 miles> and it ran great although a bit advanced).
I know that the older Duraspark worked great and was bulletproof. So what's the hot-ticket method for retrofitting the DSII into a rig wired for EEC? I'd much rather go with the duraspark over points.... but in all the years of twisting wrench (both privately and for Ford) I've never needed this mod........ and yes, I spent many years as a mech for a Ford dlr. so am familiar with points/DSII/ and EEC.........
When I did the swap it was literally plug and play. Had to grab the pigtail between the DS module and distributor from a yard (and the module and dizzy), otherwise it was just a matter of unplugging the old harness and plugging in the DS module.
After reading the responses here, and doing a search on the EEC to DS swap...... and the fact that I happen to have a correct non-electronic carb in the shop that will fit... as well as the harness and module off my old 80 Bronco, I'm off today to the JY for a DS dizzy....
As long as I'm there I'll grab a new htr blower motor, and a new steering column as the old one is rather hacked-up.... and I'll grab any other bits and pieces that catch my eye lol......
