i have a 302 in my 77 f100 i was wondering if the 302 would be good for offroad purposes if not what engine should i use? also what would be good gear ratio's...its a two wheel drive so should i try 4.56's
Depends on what type of off-roading you're talking about. In most cases you'll probably want as much horsepower and/or torque as you can get. A 302 will limit you either way.
Also, 2-wheel drive could be a problem unless you're talking drag racing.
Just my 2¢

302's will run as long as you keep the RPM's up in a range they like. 4.56 or steeper gears will help but the lower you go (higher numerically) the worse your street mileage will get. It also depends on any other mods you might make.
A 302 isn't big enough for what you want. A 400 or 460 with a manual transmission and high torque gears in the back paired with monter AT tires would be my answer. But, you are going to have to decide, these aggressive 4-wheel drive trucks get lowsy gas mileage because of their low gearing and aggressive tires. I have an F350 dually with noisy and gas guzzling tractor AT's and a big block. It's not cheap, so my recommendation would be to price out every option you have, and familiarize yourself with the components you want to add to the truck. From the sound of it, its gonna take a lot of work, time, effort, and most important - money. I went through the same stage on my truck, I wanted to punch it out to 500hp and 550lbft torque, but in the end I just kept it stock because it just became overwhelming for me. So, just look at your options.
a 302 will do just fine. There are better motors out there...but you will be just fine as long as you keep it reved out. Toyotas can do it with 4 bangers, right?
Just make sure you get a traction device of some sort in the rear end.
I'm swapping in the 302 because I don't want to have to fire up the brute big block to haul moulding and nails from the lumber yard-I'll be on the flat more than the incline and get way better mileage (once she's rollin' again...)
