i have a 74 torino 302 in my f100 it dont fell like i have any power on the low end is that just a 302 or am i going to have to do some rebuilding???? its got a c4 and a 9" with 2.75 gears could that also be the problem
2.75 gears will not let you go fast, nomatter what. I have a very, very healthy 302 that is still pretty slow at low speeds. On the highway is a very different story..... I do 75-80 MPH with a C4, and I do it at 2500 RPM, and get around 14-17 MPG. None of your buddies can do that with a 3 speed auto, and some can't do it with a 4 speed overdrive.
Ahh yesss.... '67 Newport. The car I learned to drive in. That brings back memories. But I digress.
383 w/727 is a good combo for a heavy vehicle but would be a complicated swap with different (read fabricated) engine mounts, relocated transmission crossmember, etc.
If you're looking to do a swap, you might want to think about going with a 300 cid straight 6. It would be a simple swap for your 302. They have the same bellhousing bolt pattern, they've got lots of torque, are plentiful and cheap. Sounds like a step backwards, but they're a much better engine for a truck than the 302. All the parts needed are readily available.
Just my 2¢

yeah, a stock 302 is a bit sluggish to be pushing a truck with only 2.75 out back, but if you keep your little Windsor, just change your ring and pinion to a 3.55 ratio or better, it will make a world of difference. Reason is, 302s start pulling very hard above the 2000 RPM range, which you'll never get to with 2.75s. I know I can drive from Atlanta to Charleston (365 miles), and never revv above 2500 RPM. Great for gas milage, but it's not as fun as having neck-breaking torque like a steeper gear will give you. I will say, the 383 is a great motor, but it is a Chrysler, and it should stay that way. You will have a world of problems if you try to swap that motor in, especially since the one you have is fine. Give it a break, and swap in some killer rear end gears. I promise, it will be like night and day. You can make it even easier by going to the boneyard and getting an entire rear end with the gear ratio you want, and bolt it right up to your truck. That would be an easy swap, and you'd have all the power and speed that you need.
after running a compression test on the 302 im gonna trade it in for somthing else and the 300 I6 has crossed my mind i can get one out of an 82 granada would that work out
