Scuff plate hiding rust

Anyone owning a 92-95 F150 might want to check under their scuff plates. Thats the part located in the door jamb that you step over when getting in the truck. Usually a black strip of plastic. They are mounted with philips screws. Under the plate is a channel. Great place for dirt to sit. Cean the channel out and apply a rust inhibitor. I managed to get to mine before anything serious started.

Scuff plate hiding rust

Thanks Cid.

I posted a link to this in the Truck forum for those years also.

Would you know if this affects our F250's for the same years. We have a '92 F250.

Thanks for the heads up.

Living in the rust belt, this is a constant battle.

All '80-96 F-Series & Broncos are just like that.

Scuff plate hiding rust

Sorry as the last post indicated, I should have gone WAY back. Yes, this would include old and new trucks and vans. The scuff plate hides a pocket or channel where the dirt from your shoes likes to go. The dirt works its way under the scuff plate, gets wet, and acts as a sponge. This is the same type of problem that effects (is it effects or affects I can never remember) the rear quarter panel on the F150's. Thankfully this problem only requires a few minutes with a Philips screw driver (maybe a Torx or
Posi-Drive for some), vacuum, and some rust proofing.

While it isnt a scuff plate, Some explorers from 93 up, had ground effects kits, they were mounted byjust poking holes in the rocker. Huge moisture trap, rusts from the inside out. Water gets in around the molding mounting and goes to the bottom where it sits and cannot escape! =(

I wonder how many after maket installation techs's are paying attention to how they fix all those add ons. Rust loves rockers. I fixed my mud flaps on with teflon nuts and bolts and treated the holes using primers and paint. Extreme, but no rust to date.

You should also probably keep a eye on the beltstrip on the doors. (the peice that pppresses up against the window to keep water out) they crack and let water into the door. Have been seeing alot of rust @ the bottoms of doors as well.

CID i wonder how many tech's care? Unless its their vehicle, they probably don't. Local Custom shop (not mine) filled in taillights on a Chevy truck w/ bondo.. All bondo. ICK!

Ya, I dont think its an issue with them. There's big bucks in dealers selling after market products. Everyone from the mechanics to the body shop folk and Ive even seen car salesman drilling holes to install stuff because the car was promised for the weekend and the customer is in the showroom waiting for the car.
