1988 F-250 351W / C6 swapped in a 300 I6 / NP435 out of a 76 model and the altenator gauge is reading low, around 8.5v - 9v. Tested altenator and it is putting out between 13.6v - 13.8v. What would cause the gauge to read lower than the alt output? I had the alt from the 351 on there for a while and it would flucuate between 9v - 14v so I assumed there was a grounding issue somewhere, then I put the earlier style alt on it and now it is reading low... what am I missing?
There might be a corroded wire or connector leading into the cab.
You also might have a bad cab to chassis ground.
I just changed my strap. It's about beneath your feet on the drivers side floor.
