My 97 Expeditions front end is squeeling like a stuck pig. The dealer and a tire store both tell me the joints are fine but its just the sealed tie rods making noise. Any one know of a spray lube or penetrating oil that I could use to quiet my front end that won't damage the joints? Thanks
The most common places for squeeking in the front end are the idler arm, ball joints and tie rod ends in that order in my experience.
It's pretty hard to get any lube into any of the joints but you might be able to carefully pull the dust boot off and spray in some liquid grease like Ford Multipurpose spray grease or another one that is good is HoneyGoo but it's not always easy to find. Any sort of spray grease as opposed to oil might work...or it might not....just depends on if it seeps into the dry spot or not.
Replacing the tie rod ends isnt a really big job if you decide to fix it correctly
Thanks Racerguy, I'll try the lube, replacing the front end seems to much though as theres no problem with it. A good buddy who just bought a 2003 has the same squeek, it's not a mechanical problem, just makes it seem like you don't maintain the vehicle. A little embarassing for guys who are maintenance freaks.
