I have a 79 Bronco with open diffs front and rear and i want to set it up for a bit of a wheelin truck and was thinking locker rear and posi front, but i am just wondering how its going to turn on the snow and ice in the winter if i put in that posi? if any one has a posi in the front and has driven it in a place with snow and ice then add your wisdom and insight please and thanks.
I've never driven one but it should be ok. What causes trouble in the front is a locker because when it locks/unlocks it will make the truck a little unpredictable when turning. It's ok off-road because you're not going very fast, but on the street it could be trouble. The limited slip is pretty smooth and you should be ok. I've driven limited slip vs non-limited slip rear end F-150s and the LS is actually more smooth I think. I can kick out the rear end just as easily with an open so I don't think it really matters that much. Just a locker is more trouble in the front.
A front posi is going to give you some very strange handling characteristics on snow and ice since the wheels won't necessarily have enough traction to overcome the clutch pre-load and differentiate. This is going to cause the truck to understeer any time you're in a limited traction situation. You are much better off with a torque-proportioning differential like a Torsen or a Detroit True-Trac which don't have any clutches to deal with. Only problem is I don't know if they make one for a D44.
I have posi front and rear in my 76 F-100 and have no problems at all in winter conditions. City or hiway driving is normal and off road it is an excellent combination.
