Can anyone tell me how I can figure out what my axles came off of? I have a 79 F150 that someone put 3/4 ton axles on. Is there any way to tell what they came off of? The reason Im asking is I need parts and have no clue what I should look for. Like what year or type of vehicle will work. The back in Dana and the front is Spicer if that helps.
Thanks
Chucky B
Both axles should have a bill of materials number stamped on one of the tubes. It should look something like 610040-4. With this number any reputable Dana/Spicer parts supplier should be able to find anything you need. There is also a tag mounted between two of the differential cover bolts which has the bill of materials number along with the gear ratio and another number that I don't recognize. If it has not been removed. Hope this helps a little.
Thanks for the help. Im going to get under there this weekend and figure it out.
I do have a question about the axles. If Im looking for a lift kit what would I look for? Would I look at F250 axles or does it have to be Dana/Spicer?
Thanks Again

Ok, I posted a question a couple of weeks ago about how to figure out what my axles came from. I have 79 F150 that has 3/4 ton Dana axle in the front and Spicer axle in the rear (I think it could be the other way) Anyway I looked where I was told and came up with 3-30255 for the rear and 82140 for the front. Thats the only numbers I can find anywhere. They dont look right. The drivers side i found it on the short tube in front and the back I found it between two bolts on the cover. Ive looked all over every place, sprayed degreaser and buffing with a rag to polish so I can read and there isnt any numbers anyplace. The tag on the back has no writing at all. Does anyone have an Idea of how I can figure this out?
Thanks
Chuck
There is a tag but there isnt anything on that I can tell. It has paint on it. Im going to get some paint thinner from work and see if I can get anything off of it. When I first got the truck a friend came over and told me that one axle was dana and the other was a spicer. That why I say I have that type. If the tag is on the back shouldnt there be a stamp also? Also these numbers on the front there stamped in the spot that I was told they would be. I looked all over the axle. Is it posable these didnt get a stamp? Im about ready to burn it to the ground
Those numbers can be stamped almost anywhere. most of the time they are where they are supposed to be but they turn up all over. Wire brush time. On that tag, try making a rubbing with a pencil and paper sometimes you can pull some "ghosts" out that way. Call those numbers into your ford dealer or a good drivetrain shop and they're usually happy to drag out the old books and decode them for you. By all means, do pull the covers to change the lube if nothing else ( probably way overdue, most are). That small tag in the back, if you're lucky, might be the "use limited slip lube " tag for a power lok or a trac lok unit.
