So will anything that bolted to a 460 bolt to a 351M with a modification to the crossmember and driveline? Now you all got me riled up about this, I want OD.
I am desperately seeking the same... a 5 speed that has an overdrive (and a low is a plus too) so I been researching the ZF swap into my 78 bronc (I posted some threads in the tranny section about this). This is about the only info I found so far: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...threadid=44122
Evidently it is possible to put a ZF onto a 351M/400 (atleast the 5 speed... I think the 6 speed version might be a powerstroke diesel only tranny?). I want the power clutch too but I havent figured out much about that. But the problem with the ZF is I guess the clutch placement on a 460 is different than a 351M/400 so the cluthc needs farbrication. Check out the link abouve for all that info. It also says you can even use a np205 on it as well (good for me as I got a few of them and I wont have to modify any u-joints or driveshafts). If anyone learns more on this swap please let me know! I am still trying to figure out if I can ad a hydraulic clutch to this swap.
as far as transfer case
np 205 gear drive and cast housing(sure its gonna b harder and more costly to fix) vs most/all others chain poss. alum case(borg warn)
hey i like bullet-proof myself and rather stay with the 205
hey if they had a cast zf like the aluminum ones i would go that way
hey running a german tranny(allways has been) isn't as bad as the jap they get from mazda(?)
I think the 6 speed is available on the V10 as well as the diesel. The question is ....is there compatability between the v10 and the 351m\400 bolt patterns. I have no idea but surely someone has investigated this subject. For what it would cost to purchase, modify , and install an nv4500 you can buy a NEW Gearvendors OD and use your old tranny. They make the BEST OD unit on the market today....no question. fd
yah i thought of a bolt-on od box and ....
first don't think that its a good match for a 4 wheel drive
even if it was bolted in you would have to change the(/both) driveshafts and as i know when you go hear the bronco's double-cartigan driveshaft you are looking at a bill
they got me for 250 to put a cap and univ joint on
Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I beleive the triton motor and deisel ZF's dont have the same bolt pattern as the 460/351M/400 pattern. I think the ZF with this bolt patter was used in 87 or 88 through mid 90's trucks. Should be pretty strong as it was used up to the F-450's (although I dont know much about the nv4500). I too thought about a aux OD unit but with my bronco and a lift the driveline angles are gonna be too extreme i think because the shaft will be so short. Pluss, I have seen ZF's on ebay for $1,000 reman. (havent checked anywheres else yet though) and I would much rather have the manual 5 spd versus the auto c6 w/ OD unit personally. I am just not sure if I am gonna be able to get the clutch fabbed.
I agree with you battered_bronco... but I am the kinda person who if I dont have every step thought out and detaield ahead of time and all the parts, then I'll never finish it and it will sit in the garage forever.
Well I am too lazy to go through six gears to get to overdrive. SO here is my plan, I picked up this Ford Toploader 3 speed OD unit for what it cost me to drive out to the junkyard. I gots friends there so it was all good. I think this will work just fine. I don't know waht kind of adjustments I am going to have to make but that doesn't really matter because I can probably fab it.
