how long should my choke stay closed at the 1st start of the day? this is in my 1978 f100 with a 1986 351w HO in it. I had the carb rebuilt at a reputable shop(bench rebuilt). I noticed that the word motorcarft on the choke housing is upside down now, not sure if it was when I brought the carb in to get it rebuilt. I tried to adjust it so it was right side up, but the choke plate would not move freely when the housing was in this position. When I start the truck up for the 1st time of the day, the choke will not open by itslef, and the engine starts flooding out. If I open the choke slowly by hand when it is running, it runs fine after awhile. the wire for the choke has power and the housing is warm when the truck is running, so i am pretty certain that part of it is working right. I just need some advice on how to get the choke adjusted properly...sorry so long, and thanks again for the help....Ben
Sounds if the electric choke was put on upside-down. If its a Motorcraft elec. choke. it will have index line on top(on bottom if yours is wrong) that matches 5 index lines on choke housing cast.
As your choke heats up the coil inside expands, in which causes choke plate to open.
Is the connection for your wire at the top or bottom of the Motorcraft?
Was a new choke put on or did they reuse the one on it?
If you turn electric choke housing, that far so as to turn it right side-up you are actually, depending wich way your turning, either making the coil inside tighter or making it loose.
Pull it off to turn it around, so as to have Motorcraft right side up, index marks matching, and choke wire connection at the bottom.
When you go to reset the choke, make sure the tang on the choke coil engages the slot on the arm inside the housing. With the throttle slightly open you should be able to rotate the cap back and forth to open and close the choke. Then with everything cool (60° to 70° F) rotate it just enough to close the choke plate and snug it down there.
