Very interested. Thanks
What is it about these trucks that requires us to consider filtering coolant? I've driven a lot of trucks, both gas and diesel, and have never had these concerns.
I owned two 7.3's and a Dodge 6.9. Checking oil daily, checking coolant, monitoring temps and getting oil analysis isn't something that was remotely a concern.
I think its a good idea to have one on a diesel engine considering the amount of flow that is pushed through these engines....the 6.0 supposedly had casting sand left behind, but I think its the coolant nitrates breaking down, which in turn clogged coolant passages in the oil cooler and EGR cooler......Cheap insurance if you ask me. I will check with him and get back to you, I think he is still on vacation but I will let you know.
While it can't hurt I don't see the need in the 6.4 myself.
I do have a concern with your loosing coolant issue. Have you inspected all of your EGR components and your radiator and hoses?
Any white splatter anywhere?
Haven't had a chance to just yet. Was going to first thing in the morning. First coolant issue. Can you give me a quick checklist of things & areas to check?
Seems from what I've read, that lots of 6.4's have had episodes of drinking coolant without an explanation. But i'll definitely be investigating it further.
Look at EGR valve
Get flashlight. Shine on hose connections to the motor look for splatter
Take flashlight thru drivers side wheel well shine along the egr coolers and connections
Take flashlight and shine it along the radiator sides looking for moisture/rust there as well.
Better get it into the dealer, they will pressure check it and find the leak. One word of caution, if they say it is leaking at the Radiator hoses and NOT the O rings you will not be covered under warranty. Of the two leaks I had the EGR leak made coolant disappear faster than the hoses leaking.
Call me crazy... But I checked the level this morning and it's just above the low level. ??? What's with the variance? When I looked the other day, it was warm...
Cold weather definately affects the level. All summer my level was at the top line, the last 2 weeks its been -20*c here and its down to just below the bottom fill line.
